When I first started to learn how to play guitar, I had to learn to tune by ear, which was about 80% accurate. As I got older and started what was essentially Nirvana cover bands, I started utilizing an electric tuner.  When buying a guitar for children, it’s what I would recommend.  You can usually find a low-priced electric tuner that is battery operated and has a built in microphone.

Most guitar tutorials (especially for kids and beginners) are tuned to standard which is EADGBE and is the most popular in terms of playing many pop songs.  Once you show kids how to affectively use the electronic tuner, they can experiment with additional tunings to help them find their own sound.
