A question parents often ponder when allowing their child to learn to play an instrument is: when is the right time? The answer can vary depending on the instrument.  You might want to consider allowing your child to learn to play guitar.   There are many different types of kids guitars to choose from. Parents want to know if their child is old enough to play guitar and one consideration should be whether their wrists and fingers are strong enough to successfully play chords on the guitar. For this reason, experts recommend waiting until a child is at least seven years old to start this instrument. Children who want to start playing before the age of seven can start on the piano. They will learn basic chords, notes, and rhythms while their bodies grow strong enough to play the guitar.

Beginning guitarists often learn in a group setting.  Most parents choose this option because it is the most affordable however students do not get to benefit from this one on one attention in a group setting. In an individual lesson, the teacher is able to pinpoint areas that the child needs to work on much more easily. Once you have started lessons, you must work hard to encourage your child to practice.   Learning to play guitar can have many benefits for your child and you will be glad you invested your money and time in such a worthwhile pursuit!

Learning to play an instrument has been proven to have amazing educational benefits in children. One of the most popular instruments for beginning musicians is the guitar. However, purchasing all the necessary equipment, like an amp, case and cables, can be an expensive venture.  For kids guitars costs are significantly less however with a tight budget parents should consider cheap kids guitars because they are often of very good quality.

For beginner guitar players, there are some easy ways to save money while you learn the ropes. Look for discounted models in online stores; avoid buying secondhand, because you can’t be sure of the quality.  Also, if you are just starting, you might want to purchase the guitar first and then go for the accessories after you or your child has played for awhile to see if it the guitar is right for you or your child.

There are some activities that children can pursue which will truly help them in many facets of their lives, and one of those activities is learning to play a musical instrument. Even if they don’t continue to play beyond school, they will always have the discipline offered by this undertaking. They will have obtained the concrete skill of being able to read music. Overall, a more creative individual evolves.

That being said, it’s a great idea to encourage and help your child in his quest to learn to play an instrument. Whether it’s the guitar, violin, or the trombone one thing to keep in mind is that you should always get an instrument that’s tailored to your child. Check out kids guitars if that’s your child’s instrument of choice.  If cost is an issue there are many cheap childrens guitars available that do not skimp on quality.  Childrens guitars are a little smaller and easier to handle and just remember that as your child grows, their guitar will grow with them!

The necessity of learning to be rhythmic

When a child dreams of becoming a ‘Rock God’, a lead guitarist most children imagine themselves playing extended solos in front of adoring fans. In truth, the best rock songs are almost always held together by a solid rhythm guitar player,(an unsung hero who provides the backbone for the song).  Rhythm playing might seem boring and not glamorous but it is absolutely essential for any traditional rock song structure. Take Pete Townshend for example, a very competent and capable solo player but without his great rhythms Roger Daltrey’s voice and Keith Moon’s drums wouldn’t have come across as well as they did.

Children begin to lay a basic foundation of musical knowledge with their kids guitars when they are young so it’s a good idea to get them off on the fight foot.  Have your child listen to some examples of some quality rhythm playing.  You might begin with something obvious that is has a lot of guitar riffs, like something from the Who.  Bad habits are hard to undue so learning proer technique, like good rhythm is essential.

What Makes It A Kids Guitar?

If you’ve looked at kids’ guitars online, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that they are shorter than full sized guitars. There are two reasons for this; one is blatantly obvious and the other not so much.  Obviously children are smaller in stature than adults, so they will need a scaled down instrument. Just lifting and holding a normal-sized guitar properly could create many problems for a child and perhaps even discourage further musical development.

The typical childrens guitar features a shorter scale length, making it much easier to play. This allows the frets to be spaced closer together to accommodate a child’s smaller fingers. In addition, the string tension can be reduced in a short-scale guitar without having a detrimental effect on its tone.  A longer scale length requires tighter tension, making that the strings are tougher to press down.  Parents may want to consider discount kids guitars to keep cost down for a child who is just learning to play guitar and unsure if he or she wants to continue or not.

Have you ever listened to a recording of your own voice?  In today’s times we have the opportunity to hear our voice home movies, answering machines and voice mail.  When we hear our own voice in a recording we can have an array of responses from some mild apprehension to outright embarrassment.  Recording one’s voice can often prove beneficial as we often don’t   sound the way that we think we do. For a recording artist, being aware of how one’s voice sounds is absolutely essential!

Beginning guitar players can take advantage of the same technique when they practice. The best part is that the quality of the recording device doesn’t make much difference.   This is good news for beginning guitar players and parents who are just starting to have their child learn to play the guitar. So not only is there’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on a pricy recorder but parents can consider cheap kids guitars and not sacrifice quality. The important thing is that the children learn to identify their mistakes through listening to their own work on their very own kids guitars!

Learning to play the guitar with accompaniment

For many years, children have had a fascination with the guitar. Along with the piano, the guitar is one of the instruments used most when a soloist performs.  The radio as well as music videos are filled with guitar music.  People appreciate different aspects of the guitar from the pageantry to it’s crisp melodic tone.  As parents we want to help children reap the many benefits of learning to play this wonderful instrument.

In truth, the full potential of kids guitars can only be unlocked when they are played with some form of accompaniment. In today’s times, children and parents will have to make a choice between acoustic guitars for kids and electric guitars for kids.  The Rolling Stones didn’t just stumble upon their talent and success overnight; rather, they spent tens of thousands of hours honing their act. If kids don’t have the luxury of strumming their guitar alongside a drummer, ( as many often don’t)  a metronome is a very good alternative.  It will keep the child’s playing on track and give him a benchmark for timing purposes which is extremely important.

Learning How To Tune The Guitar!

When I first started to learn how to play guitar, my only method to tune this precious instrument was by ear, which is approximately 80% accurate. As I got older and started to play in what was essentially a Bon Jovi cover band, I began to use an electric tuner.  When purchasing kids guitars an electric tuner is also what I would recommend.  You can usually find a low-priced electric tuner that is battery operated and has a built in microphone.

Most guitar tutorials (especially for kids and beginners) are tuned to standard which is EADGBE and is the most popular in terms of playing many pop songs.  Once you show kids how to affectively use the electronic tuner, they can experiment with additional tunings to their hearts content to find their own sound.

Getting Your Own Cool Guitar

My extremely cool and ultra sweet daughter says that she wants an electric guitar in the worst way.  After a very persuasive argument she has actually convinced me that a kids guitar would be a perfect gift for her!  I am glad she is enthusiastic and I just hope that those ‘cool’ kid guitars are in our price range. My daughter assures me that they are because she has a friend who got one for Christmas and her father is even out of work right now.  I must admit that she is probably right so I guess I’m game.

I am pretty impressed with the different models of electric guitars for kids available.  Her birthday is January 30th and so I guess now is as good a time as any to get him this precious gift.  I must admit that I begged my folks for a guitar when I was her age but my frugal parents made me wait until I was much older.  Times sure have changed!
