The Family That Rocks!

With a big family you have a lot of birthdays.  We just celebrated our son’s 16th birthday.  We had a lot of fun and we got him a new guitar amp, guitar picks and gig bag that he seemed to really love.  But more importantly, he is so excited that he will be driving soon!, (I’m not sure his parents share this enthusiasm!)  Now our younger son wants to follow in his big brother’s footsteps.  He too wants to play guitar and wouldn’t you know it, he just happens to have a birthday next month.  My wife said “no way” a guitar is out of the question.  I however feel that I can refute some of her complaints, (i.e. cost).  After looking online yesterday I found some discount kids guitars that I think our young rocker may love!

My wife is still not totally onboard but I think we can tackle the cost as well as the inevitable noise that will ensue.  If a kids guitar will make him happy than I think we should support him.  I believe that the family that rocks together stays together.  Stay tuned!

Getting Your First Guitar

My all “too cool” son says that he wants an electric guitar in the worst way.  After a very persuasive argument he has actually convinced me that a kids guitar would be perfect for him.  I am glad he is enthusiastic and I just hope that those “cool” kid guitars are in our price range.  My son assures me that they are because he has a friend who got one last week and “his” dad is out of work right now.   I guess I’m game.

After looking online and talking to friends I think that kids guitars may in fact be more affordable than I thought.  His birthday is next month so I guess now is as good a time as any to get him this precious gift.  I must admit that I begged my folks for a guitar when I was his age but my frugal parents made me wait until I was much older.  Times seem to really have changed but when it’s all said and done, people remain pretty much the same.

When Your Kid Wants To Become A Rock Star!

jammo electric guitars for kidsAll my life I have wanted to be a mother and I couldn’t be happier with the kids that I have, (minus a few little quirks, like keeping their bedrooms from becoming subject to a state inspection!)  Our seven year old son told us about two months ago that he was destined toward rock star royalty.  I said “Oh really?  Will you remember us when you’re rich and famous?”  We started to get a jump start on our aspiring “Rock God’s” career.  With much ado, we decided to look at electric guitars for kids.  So this past Christmas we gave our eager son a “really cool” kids guitar, what a success!  We have assured him that there are some rock stars who do manage to graduate from high school.

We have managed to have our son participate in after school activities including boy scouts.  We actually have asked our nephew who has been playing electric guitar for several years to give our son some lessons.  Our kids are only young once so I want to appreciate the here and now.  I can hardly wait to see what the future holds!

add childrens electric guitarsAs a father of five children it can be a struggle at times to make ends meet but we manage ok and more importantly we love each other to death.   That’s not to say that we don’t really try each other’s nerves at times but I guess what family who spend a lot of time together doesn’t?  Our middle energetic son who also struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder has been FASCINATED with the electric guitar for awhile now.  My wife and I finally broke down this Christmas and bought him a beginner electric guitar!  We were concerned however that he already HATES doing his homework and will purchasing him a kids guitar prove to be yet another distraction for him?  I must say that our search online confirmed what we had heard and that is that childrens electric guitars are more affordable than you might think.

I don’t think I have ever seen someone happier than my son on Christmas morning.  He jammed for all of us during Christmas vacation, (ok I will say that his siblings and even my wife weren’t always as enthusiastic and he and I were but for the most part they were good sports!)   Now that he is back in school we finally realized that his guitar playing is VERY much contingent upon completion of homework.  The first week he very much protested but now he realizes that the longer he protests the shorter time he has to play his beloved guitar, what leverage!  We plan on getting him some guitar lessons soon which makes him very happy.

rocker childrens electric guitarsWith Christmas Eve only 2 days away, my husband and I finally feel that we are ready for the big day.  We decided at the last minute to get an electric guitar for our son and finally found one that was shipped to us yesterday.  My husband had started searching on line for childrens electric guitars last week.  We feel really excited about giving this gift as we know he REALLY  wants to play guitar!  My husband will play Santa Claus tomorrow night and we will be quite happy Christmas morning to see the look on his face when he sees what Santa has brought.

I will be glad when the rush of Christmas is over but I still love to see the joy in my kid’s faces when they receive the gifts that they really want. My daughter will be thrilled beyond belief that she gets the Barbie dolls and accessories that she wanted.   A kids guitar, what more could my son ask for?  Yes Santa Claus is coming to town!

little hannah beginner childrens guitarsAs a practical mom I want my kids to pick hobbies and interests that will serve them well later in life.  I love that they have chosen musical hobbies like playing flute and trombone.  I only feel concerned when they talk about making music a career which seems like quite a long shot to me.  Now my youngest daughter says that she WILL be the next Hannah Montana no matter what.  We have decided to honor her request for an electric guitar and after an exhaustive search for beginner childrens guitars we finally found a really cute kids guitar that she will be more thrilled than ever to get on Christmas day!

I am happy for my daughter but am hoping and praying that this wish to be a rock star is only a passing phase.  I know that I need to be supportive of my children and I guess that if they are TRULY successful and happy in life, then I will support them.  I know somebody is going to be very happy Christmas morning!

old fart young fart beginner childrens guitarsI am a total musical enthusiast.  I have played guitar, banjo and the drums for many years.  My middle son has picked up on my love of drums and now has his own junior kids drumset that he plays with reckless abandon.  Now our youngest daughter has shown a real interest in learning to play guitar.  I am thrilled and have already begun research on beginner childrens guitars.  I am THRILLED that my kids have discovered the joy of music!

As a teen I played in a band and now I still perform every once and a while.  I think it would be great if someday my kids would play together in a band.  With Christmas just around the corner, I think I can find a kids guitar that will put the biggest smile on my daughter’s face Christmas morning!  We promise to keep the noise level at an acceptable level for our neighbors!

Good Posture Makes for Perfect Practice

childrens guitarWe’ve talked at great length about how important posture can be for a beginning drummer. It can mean the difference between kicking out a steady beat and creating a lackadaisical framework for more sloppy music to build from. Posture is just as important when practicing childrens guitar. There are two primary positions that are appropriate for practicing electric.

Both positions call for one foot to be slightly elevated. In the casual position, a right-handed guitar is placed on the right thigh, with the right foot elevated. Classical position requires that the neck of the guitar is tilted upright, with the guitar perched on the left thigh and the right left leg elevated. The proper positions for classical guitars differ slightly because the right hand should be better positioned for picking.

The Theory behind Kids’ Guitars

guitarIf you’ve done any browsing around for kids’ guitars online, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that they are somewhat shorter than regular guitars. There are two reasons for this; one is blatantly obvious and the other slightly more nuanced. Logic tells us that children are smaller in stature than adults, so they can benefit from a scaled down instrument. Just lifting and holding a normal-sized guitar properly would be liable to create problems for the kid and perhaps even discourage her musical development.

The typical childrens guitar features a shorter scale length, making it easier to play. This allows the frets to be spaced closer together to accommodate a child’s relatively short fingers. In addition, the string tension can be reduced in a short-scale guitar without affecting tone in a detrimental way. A longer scale length requires tighter tension, meaning that the strings are tougher to press down.

Become a Real Guitar Hero

guitar-hero-songbookAnyone who has tried to play an instrument knows how mundane the first few months can be. No matter how old you are, you can only play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” so many times before you want to tear your hair out. When I was learning to play my first instrument, my instructor allowed me to play music that I enjoyed, which encouraged me to practice more.

One of the reasons that kids are so excited to play the Guitar Hero videogame is that it features familiar songs that they enjoy. Now you can take advantage of this in your efforts to get your kids to practice their real instrument with the Guitar Hero songbook. It features the same songs from the game and is specifically designed for beginning players.
