The Life Of The Party!!

My son is just too cute!  Maybe I’m a bit biased but can a mother really be objective?  He is a bit of a natural ‘ham’ and being the center of attention seems to come easily to him.  Show and Tell has to be the best part of school for him and he is excited to show the class his kids electric guitar that we bought him for his birthday two weeks ago!

On Friday he is planning to go to school with his little cowboy hat and jam with his new cool guitar in front of the whole class!  My husband and I found so many interesting childrens guitars available that we may just get one for our younger son!   I am looking forward to Friday and plan on getting lots of pictures and who knows maybe my husband and I will get some more kids guitars for ourselves!

Kids!!

Last year our youngest son told my husband and I that what he wanted most for his birthday was a beginner electric guitar.  We told him that we would ‘think’ about it, (a parent’s standard answer that is often given really just to get kids off their backs.)  Anyway, his birthday came and went and he unfortunately did not get his beloved kids electric guitar.  As his birthday approaches this year he’s gotten a little wiser and has employed his older brother to do the bargaining for him!

Our older son has tried to give us the selling points of getting a beginner kids guitar for his kid brother.  We really have to admire their persistence and because of it we will look into the matter further.  I guess we had just ruled it out because of cost but it appears that it may not be as expensive as we had originally thought.  The hard work of both our sons may have really paid off.  He might just have his best birthday yet!!

Father and Daughter Bonding Time!

I have had a REAL love of the guitar since at least the age of five.  Life as a musician has not always been easy.  It isn’t always easy to make ends meet and at times it means working part-time at various odd jobs here and there.  I am divorced from my kids mother and live with my girlfriend who loves my kids and is a great help but also has two kids of her own to support.

I was looking online for a new guitar stand and gig band and was also looking at discount electric guitars on this certain website.  While I was looking at this website I saw some kids electric guitars that were really cute and looked like they would be a perfect match for my daughter!  Her birthday is not until October but I figure that these are prices I can not beat and I have a kids electric guitar in mine that I think she will just absolutely love!  My ten year old daughter has been begging me for guitar lessons anyway. So I can hardly wait for her birthday to get here.  What a great father/daughter activity playing together this will be!

Making Ends Meet!

It always seems like the cost of living gets worse and worse.  Each year we really struggle to make ends meet.  We try to save but somehow something comes up and we somehow manage to cut into our emergency fund.  With four kids it’s a struggle to make it in today’s times.  It seems that every time we turn around there’s another birthday and before we know it it’s time for Christmas!  Now that it’s almost September, we face the birthday of our youngest son.

We always have a difficult time with his birthday because it’s getting closer to Christmas and we need to start saving money for Christmas gifts.  What our son wants more than anything else in the world this year is a kids electric guitar!  We want to get this for him so very badly and are not sure if we will get him this for his birthday or Christmas.  Yesterday I did an internet search and I typed in cheap kids guitars.  I found some good deals and from what I can gather the guitars look to be of good quality.  I’m surprised because I really thought that we were going to have to spend more money!  As parents you do the best you can, say a prayer, cross your fingers and hope for the best!  I think our son will get his childrens electric guitar for his birthday!

What is the right scale length for your child?

When describing electric guitars for kids what comes to mind is a “Short scale guitar or a ¾ sized guitar ” but that really isn’t the whole story.   Some short scale kids electric guitars are longer than others, so it’s important to look at the specific scale length, and whether that’s right for your child. A three quarter sized scale length for a kids guitar can be anything from a 22.2 inch scale length to a 24 inch scale length. The scale length may vary even more for kids acoustic guitars. Scale length is defined as the distance from the bridge of the guitar to the nut. Therefore a kids electric guitar with a short scale length means that the frets on the guitar are closer together, allowing for small hands to reach across more frets. An advantage of using an electric guitar on a short scale length, is that the strings need a lot less tension to be tuned up to pitch, making it so much easier to press chords and notes.

For a child from the ages of about 6 to 10, a short scale guitar with a 22.2 or 22.7 inch scale length will work very well. Of course the size of the ten year old makes a difference.  It is possible that for a 10 year old, a 24 inch scale length will be a good fit.  Most kids around the age of 12 years old don’t need to think in terms of kids electric guitars anymore.  They can begin to look into adult sized guitars and can consider purchasing a guitar with a 24.75 inch to a 25.5 inch scale.  As always, best of luck!

Drumming To The Beat!

What do you get a boy for his birthday who taps his fingers on anything he can find around the house?  Who uses the dinner table on a regular basis to pound out the beat to his favorite songs instead of finishing his homework?  Why you get him some beginner drums and fast because the furniture in the house could really use a break!  My wife tells me that because our son hasn’t yet had his growth spurt we should save some money and invest in some second hand childrens drums.  I have to admit that she has a point after all we don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that he will outgrow.

I think that he has caught the music bug early as both my wife and I have been musicians playing guitar, mandolin, and fiddle for many years.  Our older son plays bass guitar and we started him on a kids electric guitar borrowed from our neighbor!  We seem to be drawn to music and our son is no exception.  I look forward to what the future holds!

Our Little Rock Star!

My son is a little ham and being the center of attention seems to be something he relishes.   He has been telling my wife and I that he has dreams of being a rock star and has been going around the house playing “air” guitar.  While we are not sure we really want this dream to come to fruition we can’t resist the temptation to indulge him just a little bit.  I have decided that a kids electric guitar is in order

I think it is so cool that there are so many varieties and styles of electric guitars for children.  I have been having a blast looking at what is available online.  I found a kids guitar that I have to get and I think my wife is in agreement.  Our son has a birthday on September 15th and we will present him with his childrens electric guitar at that time.  I can hardly wait!

A Bad Decision Turned VERY Good!!!

After a lot of begging from our youngest son, we got our youngest son a childrens electric guitar for his birthday this past February.  We just weren’t sure we wanted to get him this because of cost and we also wanted our son to focus on other interests.  At the time we had our son involved in boy scouts,  basketball at the YMCA, and church choir.  He begged us for an electric guitar and really wanted guitar lessons.   We were afraid if we got him a kids guitar it would detract him from his other interests and even more importantly his schoolwork.  Much to our delight and even utter shock this hasn’t happened at all!

Not only has our son continued to pursue his other hobbies , (except for choir) but he seems to show more responsibility in most aspects of his life including his studies!  With guitar, he really appears to have more of a passion and because of this he has really picked up the basics of learning to play guitar and read music rather quickly.  He also knows that he will not be able to continue to play the kids electric guitar if he doesn’t complete his homework or continue to get good grades.  He knows that we also expect him to be involved in other activities to live a well rounded life.  Our son is willing to do whatever it takes so he can continue playing guitar.  The guitar in a roundabout way has taught him discipline.  Unknowingly, it was one of the best decisions we ever made!

My How Times Have Changed!

As a parent I can’t help but compare and contrast what is available today for kids.  Sometimes it really seems worlds away from the toys and gadgets of the 1970’s and the 1980’s.  For my parents, it’s almost incomprehensible.  Thanks to the digital age, everything has changed!    I am fascinated with all the X boxes, Ipad’s,  Ipod’s just like everyone else.  My concern however is that too many kids like my own spend too much time isolated from their peers and too much time indoors.  Even if they are online talking to their peers or texting their peers to me it doesn’t take the place of real human interaction!  Ok. I’ll get off my soapbox for now!

My dear son says that what he most wants more than anything else in the whole wide world for his eighth birthday is a kids electric guitar!  I must say that I really wasn’t expecting this!  As a child I would have never thought to ask for that!  Thanks to the internet, ( obviously not available when I was his age) I can do a quick search for childrens electric guitars and see what’s available.  One can find almost ANYTHING on the internet and most certainly a childrens guitar that is well suited for each and every child!  Despite my resistance/fascination, I can go with the flow!  Believe it or not I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Teaching Your Children Good Values

What do you get a kid for his ninth birthday who has everything?  I love my kids and I have tried to teach them throughout their lives that the best things in life are free!  I have tried to teach them the value of good times spent together as well as the importance of showing loving kindness toward ourselves and each other.  I believe that my kids see this but it’s hard when they live in such a world of materialism.  My husband and I have been divorced for five years and my ex husband earns a very nice salary.  He is able to purchase very nice gifts for our kids.  They appreciate this but I just hope that they don’t take it for granted.

My son has said that he really wants an electric guitar for his birthday.  I happen to know after speaking with his father that he has a lot of gifts planned for our son but not a kids electric guitar.  I have decided to look into the possibility of purchasing a childrens electric guitar as long as it’s in my price range.  I have heard form a very good and reliable friend that childrens electric guitars are very affordable and that there are a wide variety in which to choose.  This is good news!   As parents we do the very best to teach our children good values.  We give them roots and we give them wings and after that we just hope they fly in the direction that brings them true happiness!
