Why the drums?

Give a child a pot, a pan or a wooden spoon and most kids will begin to beat the drum! Some kids are even born with a natural sense of rhythm.   You might want to consider buying your child a kids drum set.   Kids drums come with different configurations.   There are drum sets made for children, they include 3 and 5 piece sets which consist of: cymbals, snare and bass drums and tom toms.

A kid’s drum set is a great investment that can enhance your child’s creativity.  Someday your child might pursue music as their career and learning the basics as a child can build a great foundation.  With every beat of the drum, your kid can release pent up energy.  Learning to play drums allows your child to concentrate, develop their skills and focus on becoming better.  Kids drum sets are an inexpensive way to show musical abilities.  The very very best of luck to you and your children!

A Drum History Lesson

Did you know that drums are the world’s oldest musical instrument?  Before the materials used to make drums today were found, different tribal groups have already played the drums in order to create sounds and rhythms in certain religious rituals.  Drums were used for tribal dances or simply to deliver a message or signals. Drums are usually cylindrical in shape and are open on one or both sides.

Drums have really evolved because nowadays, together with other instruments, drum sets are being used by drummers in a band.  A full sized drum set today often consists of: drums, cymbals, triangles, chimes and tambourines all at the disposal of today’s rockers.  To play the  drums, you can use two sticks, your fingers but for floor drums, you need to use your foot to step on the foot pedal.  If you start your child with some kids drums you will be off to an interesting adventure with a lot of history behind it!

Learning to Keep the Beat!

Few people would debate the fact that a sense of rhythm is the most important skill an aspiring drummer can hope to develop.  Stage theatrics that drummers perform at concerts such as twirling their drumsticks without dropping them is exciting but has nothing to do with musical ability. The true test of a drummer’s mettle comes down to one basic question – can he keep the beat?

There are several methods that youngsters can use to improve rhythm while learning to play their kids drums.  Parents can find drums for children that are tailored to a kids size and physical agility. Children can learn to count out loud under their breath making it barely audible.  By doing this they can instill their own sense of rhythm in the same way a metronome does.  In time the child will learn to transfer this steady count that they have learned to some other less obvious way of keeping rhythm – such as tapping their toe.

The Joy Of Being A kid!!

My son will be seven in just two  weeks.  This is very exciting to everyone in the family, myself included but is the most exciting to our little boy!!  He is precocious as well as ambitious and some say he has as a future doctor, lawyer, or maybe even an Indian Chief!!  Right now, I vote for a musician!!  Our son like many kids his age wants to bang the drums.  He thinks that this is very cool and so do I.  I propose to my somewhat less enthusiastic wife that we start looking at childrens drumsets.  I know that there are some very affordable and fun kids drumsets.

We however need to get a move on as his birthday will be here before we know it!!  I have already bookmarked some good websites.  A buddy of mine bought his son some kids drums and says that for the most part it has been a lot of fun for the whole family, wife included.  I very much want our son to succeed in life but along the way I want him to also have boatloads of fun.  A kids drumset is a great start!

Kids Drum Set vs.Toy Drum Set

Many parents want their kids to learn to play a musical instrument. Whether it be violin, flute,  piano or anything else learning to play an instrument and appreciate music often creates a more well rounded individual.  Teaching a child to play kids drums at an early age can be just as a rewarding and can help them excel at other activities too.  It is important to know that there is a ‘real’ difference between a kids drum set and a toy drum set.  Kids drum sets or ‘junior drum sets’ are really just smaller versions of full sized drum sets and are of very high quality.  Children are able to learn to play and get a lot of use from kids drum sets for many years to come!  Most junior drum sets come in 3 pieces and can be upgraded to a full set when your child is ready.  You can buy your child a ‘toy’ drum set if you want something for your child to play with but keep in mind that they are really just for entertainment and not suitable for your child to really learn to play the drums.   This may be a good choice for pre-school aged children.

Another clear advantage of purchasing a kids drum set today is that while the quality of the product as gone up, the prices have remained very reasonable. It is possible today to buy a kids drum set for about $100. Drum kits of higher quality can often go for $150-200. These sets are also designed to take the wear and beating that kids (especially older ones) are likely to put on them for a few years. Hopefully your ears can take it as well.  So if you are ready to buy your child a kids drum set, it is important that you know the difference between a real set and a toy drum set.

Our daughter came home from a friend’s birthday party last week and informed us that one of the gifts that her friend received from her parents was a kids drumset.  Our daughter claimed that at the party she and the other guests all got a chance to play on the drumset and it was really a lot of fun!  With Christmas  coming in five months our daughter has told us that she “has” to have a drumset like her friend’s , oh my!!

Well, at least we have a lot of time to look into this!  I think that there are probably some pretty good deals for some kids drums out there and we can take our time and find something really great for our daughter.  Since our daughter seems to love music so much I think this will be a perfect gift for her!  Christmas is a LONG way off but I know we will have one happy little girl Christmas morning!

Like Father Like Son!

I love being a father.   I love my daughter, she is the “apple” of my eye and I am so glad that she is in my life.  A love for a daughter is different than a love for a son but certainly no less special.  With my son I feel that we are “kindred spirits’.  We seem to have an unspoken understanding of each other even though he is only nine years old.  He knows that I like the drums and through the years he has watched me play drums at various venues.  I don’t play much anymore but now my son seems to have a natural inclination to play drums and not surprisingly has very good rhythm.

For my son’s tenth birthday I must get him some kids drums!  No question about it!  I have a lot of contacts to I know I will be able to find something absolutely perfect for him.  There are so many cool kids drumsets today that were not available when I was his age.   This will be a lot of fun and yet another bonding experience for he and I.  The relationships I have with my two children mean the world to me and I am so enjoying the journey.  I wouldn’t have it any other way!

The Many Reasons To Play The Drums!

Have you or one of your one of your kids discovered an interest in taking up drumming? Maybe you’ve found out that your child is constantly banging on anything, including old pans with wooden spoons. If it hasn’t driven you crazy, you may be considering purchasing them an actual set of drums. If so, you should consider a junior drum set for yourself or your child. Apart from the noise, drumming can help young ones develop skills that translate to lots of other activities.  Drumming teaches individual outstanding rhythm skills, which are useful in playing virtually any instrument, and also is helpful in lots of other activities such as sports, dance, and singing.

When beginning the search for a drum kit, there are many available in all types of sizes and configurations.  When learning to play the drums it is wise to start with a junior drum set because it is easier to maneuver so your child will be better equipped to practice and learn The other reason junior drum sets make sense for kids and a beginner is that it enables you to validate that they will enjoy the activity long term before purchasing a full set. Once your little one enjoys the junior drums for a while, he/she will eventually upgrade to a full set. If they decide that drumming is their liking, you’ve made a smaller investment. Remember, junior sets are usually great for children as they aren’t toys, but real musical instruments. They are perfect for kids because they can stand up to the beating kids will give them.  Lasting memories are built watching young ones and their ever so fun kids drums!

drums for kids cindyChristmas is coming.  Sometimes I wish I could forget that fact but it is a reality that will soon be mine as well and most people in this world.  While I hate to start shopping now, I know I should because once December hits our family becomes so busy with parties and obligations.  Cindy, my eight year old has decided that she wants to play the drums like her cousin Eric.  Cindy has always idolized Eric and so I guess it’s no surprise that she wants to pursue some of Eric’s hobbies. Well, I guess now I will be looking for some suitable kids drums.

I have begun in recent years to do much of my Christmas shopping online.  Because of this it is a good idea to shop early so you can have things shipped in time.  So tomorrow I will begin my search of drums for kids tomorrow.   My goal is to be done my shopping just before Thanksgiving so I can really enjoy the holiday season!

Our Household Jazz Trio

kids drumsWhen my son showed some interest in learning to play the drums, I was pleased to accommodate him. It came as no surprise that all he really wanted to do was back the drumheads with reckless abandon. Well, I let him get that out of his system before instilling some discipline. The only reason I became such an accomplished piano player in my own right is because of my parents’ persistence.

I like rock music as much as the next guy, but I wanted my son to get a foundation in jazz – both because the music appeals to me and because it invites creativity. In fact, the jazz trio setup highlights kids drums in a way that rock music rarely does. A typical trio consists of piano, double bass and drums. With my wife filling in on bass, we were able to create a family band. We’ll be performing “Fly Me to the Moon” at a local fundraising event, and I couldn’t be more proud.
