Drum Sets For Kids

Drum sets are an essential part of any modern orchestra or music band. Drum sets are also called as drum kits and usually contain percussion components such as drums, cymbals and other drumming instruments. Drum sets were originally developed in the United States and were known as trap kits at that point of time. Drum sets are popular amongst all age groups and most children love to hear the booming sound of a drum. There are various drum sets available nowadays that are especially designed for children.

Childrens drum sets are quite different from the normal drum sets available for adults. They generally come as a 3-piece set for children who are in the age group of 5-9 years. These include a bass drum, a snare drum and a tom-tom along with a cymbal and its holder, snare stand, drumsticks and drum pedal. Children drum sets are typically available in a variety of colors. They come with stools that can be adjusted from 13 to 17 inches according to the height of the child.  There are certain traditional kids drum sets which are designed for children. They are scaled down in different child sizes in order to give them an authentic look, but comfortable for children to play.  These sets usually come with chrome steel fittings and high gloss paint finishes in bright colors in order to increase their durability and to make them look attractive. It could be the “perfect” choice for the budding musician.

Bangin Those Drums!

My illustrious son believes that he is sure he has a promising career as the drummer of a major rock n roll band.  I am in support of his dreams, his mother however offers less enthusiasm and says that he can play drums as long as he continues his studies and has a backup plan if his plan to reach “Rock God” status does not pan out.  Someone in the family needs to have a practical approach!   Much to my surprise and my wife’s chagrin, our youngest daughter has been “begging” us for her very own kids drum set!  I don’t see the harm in it and she just happens to have a birthday coming up in May.

I have taken the liberty of looking online for kids drum sets and have some good websites bookmarked.  Now it’s just a matter of convincing my wife to “lighten up” and go along with the fun.  I’m sure my wife will use drum playing as a reward for completed chores and homework assignments.  I am in agreement with that plan.  Both my son and daughter can “bang on the drums” but not all day long!

grandma beginner drum setsI love my mother I really do!  She has been a good mother to me and now she wants to majorly dote on my kids.  It is fine with me as long as she doesn’t spoil them too much and make them think that the world will just hand them things on a silver platter.  She actually is the perfect grandma who knows that her wonderful young grandson has a big birthday approaching.  She wants to get him what he’s been talking about the very most lately, a childrens drum set!  I told my mother that if he really wants this then we will go in on the cost.  Because my mother is unfamiliar with the internet I have begun a search online.  As is often the case with the internet, if you really look, you can find some incredible deals!

Yesterday I looked for some beginner drum sets that do seem to be in our price range and a little cheaper than I thought they would be.  I have to admit that when I was young, I too loved the drums and wish that there had been more of the kids drum sets that I see available today!  Hey you only turn seven once, let him have all the fun he truly deserves!

learning to play the drums benMy husband Steve says that we have to get a drum set as a Christmas gift for our nine year old son Ben.  Steve says that his friend Patrick bought one for his son and the whole family is having such fun with it!  Ben seems to want to learn to play an instrument and Steve says that kids drum sets are not that expensive.  I guess I’m game if Ben is.

It’s great that in these times you can look online and search for good deals!  Steve says that he is going to ask around as well.  We certainly will also pick up a learn to play the drums DVD or book for Ben.  I must admit that I can really see Ben having a lot of fun with this.  I guess we will find out for sure on Christmas day!

kids drum sets brianAs a musician for many years I LOVE being able to share my interest with all my nieces and nephews.  Through the years they have even accompanied me on gigs.  I have always loved to sing.  I also play the acoustic and electric guitar as well as the mandolin.   It has been great to have family come and see me their support means more to me than they will ever know.

I am trying to “encourage” my nephew Billy who I believe is a “budding” musician with a bright future ahead of him.  He is a drummer at heart and this is very apparent to me.  Christmas is coming and I HAVE to get him a kids drum set!  I have some great contacts and wonderful friends who will guide me in the right direction to find some good quality kids drum sets.  So my fantasy is to have at least Billy join me on stage!

kids drum sets alexI am so excited for Christmas this year I can hardly wait!  I know that I have found the perfect gift for Alex!  He says he loves the drums, he uses just about everything in our house to pretend that he is playing the drums so I made the intelligent choice of buying for him his true love, a kids drum set!  Did I do well or what?  I mean I found the “deal of the century” online.  I am hiding his little treasure at my parent’s house until I Christmas day!

You HAVE to go online and check out all the really cute and very affordable kids drum sets!  I believe this will really help channel Alex’s energy in a positive way, teach him discipline and get his creative juices flowing.  Now Alex can hang out and “jam” with his friend Nicholas who recently got a kids electric guitar for his birthday!  Now if I can just get him to make his bed in the morning!

Drum Head Maintenance

drum-headGenerally speaking, drum sets can last for years and years with very little maintenance work needed. All that really matters is the condition of the drum head, commonly known as the skin. It’s important that children understand from a young age that the sound of their drums largely depends on the drum head – its tension and whether or not it’s fully intact.

At the first sign of indentions or cracks in the surface of kids drum sets, you should swap out the skins. Sometimes tiny bumps will form in the drum heads, and they will change the pitch of the drums in a way that cannot be predicted. In order to increase the longevity of a drum head, reinforce with your child that the drums are meant to be hit right in the center, not outside along the frame.

Are Your Drums in Tune?

As a parent just looking for an adequate drum set for your kids, you might not be thinking about the importance of keeping the drums tuned. You might not have even been aware that drums COULD be tuned. But have no fear; it’s not a matter of life or death. Still, if you want to instill good maintenance habits at an early age, you should at least familiarize your child with snare-drum tuning.

The sound of a drum is determined by the tension of the skin as it lies across the drum. You can turn the lugs of the drum clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to decrease it. Be aware that if you tighten the drum too much, it will be easily broken with a well-placed stick strike. And we all know that kids are all too eager to bash their kids drum set as hard as possible until they learn better.
