Teaching Your Child To Play The Drums

After looking at several types of drums for kids you have finally decided on a kids drum set that you believe your child will really love!  What should you do next?  Should you encourage them, to play or just let them learn how to play the drums on their own? Well, music and especially percussion-based music is certainly something natural to every human being, no matter how young. But most children do better with a little structure to help guide them learn.  Music has a lot to offer for growing young minds. Rhythm, coordination, listening skills, and math are all involved.  You can teach your child to recognize a beat by tapping out a rhythm to simple songs and melodies which children often pick up quickly just by imitation. You can teach your child the downbeat and the backbeat of a song by using a very simple four-number repeating loop.  You can have your child tap along to a song with a one, two, three, four beat, the downbeat is the first beat and the third beat, your child taps on the first and third beat and you count out loud on the second and fourth beat. Once your child has mastered this they will be able to play a lot of their favorite songs!

You could choose to associate each beat with one of the drums in the drum set, or cymbals or a combination of both.  Allow your child to practice until they can reproduce this pattern without having to think about it.  With a lot of practice and patience a real drummer will emerge! No more random banging noise! Instead, your child will bang out rhythm, beat, steady alternating sounds and everything else that makes a drummer worth listening to!

Kids Drum Set vs.Toy Drum Set

Many parents want their kids to learn to play a musical instrument. Whether it be violin, flute,  piano or anything else learning to play an instrument and appreciate music often creates a more well rounded individual.  Teaching a child to play kids drums at an early age can be just as a rewarding and can help them excel at other activities too.  It is important to know that there is a ‘real’ difference between a kids drum set and a toy drum set.  Kids drum sets or ‘junior drum sets’ are really just smaller versions of full sized drum sets and are of very high quality.  Children are able to learn to play and get a lot of use from kids drum sets for many years to come!  Most junior drum sets come in 3 pieces and can be upgraded to a full set when your child is ready.  You can buy your child a ‘toy’ drum set if you want something for your child to play with but keep in mind that they are really just for entertainment and not suitable for your child to really learn to play the drums.   This may be a good choice for pre-school aged children.

Another clear advantage of purchasing a kids drum set today is that while the quality of the product as gone up, the prices have remained very reasonable. It is possible today to buy a kids drum set for about $100. Drum kits of higher quality can often go for $150-200. These sets are also designed to take the wear and beating that kids (especially older ones) are likely to put on them for a few years. Hopefully your ears can take it as well.  So if you are ready to buy your child a kids drum set, it is important that you know the difference between a real set and a toy drum set.

The advantage of allowing you child to learn to play drums!

Give a child a pot, a pan or a wooden spoon and most kids will begin to beat the drum! Some children are born with a natural sense of rhythm.   You might want to consider buying your child a kids drum set.   Kids drum sets come with different configurations.  There are some instruments, like the drums that are considered  perfect for beginners and in no time, most children will  improve their skills and develop their natural talent even further. It is best if you provide your child with adequate space where he or she can practice and won’t be disturbed.  There are drum sets made for children, they include 3 and  5 piece sets which consist of: cymbals, snare and bass drums and tom toms.

A kid’s drum set is a great investment that can enhance your child’s creativity.  Someday your child might pursue music as their career and learning the basics as a child can build a great foundation.  With every beat of the drum, your kid can release pent up energy.   A kids drum set can bring out natural talent in your child and part of his or her development includes experiencing music.  Learning to play drums allows your child to concentrate, develop their skills and focus on becoming better.  Kids drum sets are an inexpensive way to show musical abilities. If your child is interested in playing the drums, ask him or her if she wants to become a more accomplished player. If so, enroll him or her in a drumming class. Look at some beginner drum sets  and buy one for your kids. The very very best of luck to you and your children!

Standing Out From The Crowd!

With five very unpredictable girls every day is an adventure to say the least!  The very interesting thing is each kid is so completely different from the other.  I mean their interests really run the gamut from basketball to scuba diving to pottery and jewelry making to playing the drums?  Yes you heard me right, playing the drums?  Our baby, who loves nothing more than to REALLY stand out from the rest, wants to play the drums NOW!!!

Our little girl has a tenth birthday arriving in two months, (which isn’t soon enough for her!) and my husband and I are debating whether or not to grant this request.  A couple of nights ago my husband and I began looking on line for childrens drum sets and noted some cute, fun and affordable sets that we may consider.  The good news is that we have time to really look into this and aren’t rushed to make a decision!  If a kids drum set will make her happy then I’m game, as long as she doesn’t become the next Hannah Montana, I’m game!

As a single dad sometimes it’s hard to find babysitters for the kids.  I am very lucky to have wonderful family and friends around to help but they can’t always be available.  I sometimes go over to my good friend Hank’s house.  In the past I have brought my kids to his home.  They seem to really like it there and Hank has two kids that are close in age to my son, (who is nine years old) and my daughter, (who is eleven years old).  My daughter as of late has been complaining somewhat about going over there as she thinks she is old enough to stay home by herself.  My buddy Hank and I used to play in a band “back in the day”.  I played bass guitar and he was a fabulous drummer in the band.  Last week hank got out his old drums and let my son play with them and basically have a little “jam” sessions.  It wasn’t long before the boy was hooked!

I have decided that for Christmas I am going to get my son a kids drum set!  I think he would absolutely love it!  I have a lot of time between now and then to look at kids drum sets and that’ll be just great because it’ll give me time to find something really good and maybe even broker a god deal.  Life isn’t always easy but we take it day by day and do the best we can which really isn’t too bad.

The Beautiful Sound Of Music!

My son seems to be very artistic and just LOVES to play!  He really loves music and just seems to want to tap to the beat naturally.  My husband suggested that we a great gift for his next birthday would be a childrens drum set!  We looked extensively to see what we could find and were delighted one- at the affordability and two- at all the really cool amenities available to kids!  Two weeks ago we presented our son with this very cool kids drum set and we were “over the moon” to see how excited and filled with joy are son was and still is!

It is wonderful what is available online for children to learn proper technique.  We have also gotten him some DVD’s.  At some point we may consider getting him a private instructor when he gets older.  I must say that our son gets his love of music honestly as his parents have been music enthusiasts most of their lives as well. His older brother continues to play keyboards in a local band while attending community college.  In my mind life would be pretty dull without the sound of music!

Marching To the Same Beat!

Growing up I had a fascination with the drums.  My parents bought me a kids drum set when I was in elementary school and when I was in high school I played in a band with a couple of my buddies.  We were into hard rock, heavy metal.  Hey it was the 80’s and the “hair bands’ were all the rave.   Then the real world came into play and now I’m a working father like everyone else.

Now that I am a father it is like going back in time.  My six year old son seems to have developed my fondness for the drums.  I have more knowledge now about drums for kids than my parents did when I was a child so I think I can find him something pretty snazzy.  As a parent you have to let your kids be who they were meant to be without influencing them to meet your own unfulfilled fantasies.  However it is quite a bonding experience when you do share a lot in common. I look forward to what the future holds!

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far!

My little boy wants to play the drums and I couldn’t be happier.  He just seems to be a natural like his old Pop.  I have been playing drums for most of my life and started playing at about his age.  In high school I played in a band and now I play really more for fun at weddings and parties.   So I really feel like a kid in a candy store going to find my boy a kids drum set that will rock his socks!  I think that my son and I will have a great time together looking at all the kids drum sets together and finding the one we want!

I already feel an incredible bond with my son and this will only intensify it for years to come.  If he decides later in life that the drums are not for him then that is fine but we can at least have a lot of fun right now!  What is great about being a parent is that you can live vicariously through your children and I intend to do so for as long as I can!

Bonding While Banging!

What do you get a kid for his birthday who is obsessed with drums?  Who spends his days watching his idols, (like Tommy Lee believe it or not) play the drums and bangs on anything he can find to the beat.  Without too much thought, you get him a drum set and not just any drum set but a kids drum set!  My son will be absolutely beside himself!  I might even have him look online with me so we can look at all the childrens drum sets available and find the “perfect” match!

While this may cost me a few bucks I know it will be worth the investment because the drums definitely won’t be sitting in the corner collecting dust!  Getting him a childrens drum set may inspire me to want to start playing again.  It’s a great outlet and I did enjoy playing as a teen.  Who knows what a bonding experience this could be for my son and I.  Time will tell!

Our Well Rounded Daughter

I guess you could say that my daughter is a tomboy.  People have said this to me but I see her as a well rounded kid.  She has play dates with girls and does like dolls but also likes to ride bikes climb trees and play sports with the boys in the neighborhood.    We will soon be getting ready to celebrate our daughter’s seventh birthday which is close to the 4th of July and our daughter says that she really wants a drum set this year!

My husband says that there are kids drum sets that are the appropriate size for our daughter.   My husband spoke to a good friend of his who pointed us to a website where he bought a kids drum set for his son last year.   It is always so interesting to see what is available today for kids.   I am looking forward to the joy I know I’ll see when our daughter has her very own set of drums!
