Parent’s Guidelines When Choosing Guitar Size For Their Child

Parents have much to choose from when shopping for kids guitars. Guitars for kids come in different shapes, styles and sizes. It is very important for parents to be educated and aware of what they are buying. In general the optimal size is always a compromise between comfort and sound quality and stability. The smaller the guitar body, the more difficult it is to get good sounding low tones. The shorter the scale is the trickier it is to get stable pitch and intonation.
Here are some general guidelines for guitar size selection: When thinking about what size electric guitar to purchase for your child it is good to consider these guidelines: Lightweight Standard size are good for kids 11 and up, and adults with sensitive backs or long gigs. The 7/8 size is good for kids 10-12 and smaller adults. The 3/4 size is good for travel, kids 8-10, and small size hands and bodies. The 1/2 size is best for travel and kids 6-8. The 1/4 size & mini is the smallest guitar, best for travel and kids 3-5. When shopping for electric bass guitars for your child or teen these guidelines could provide some help: The Lightweight Standard size is great for kids 14 and up, and adults with sensitive backs. The 7/8 size & short scale is good for kids 12 and up, and adults who prefer a short scale bass The 3/4 and medium size is good for kids 8-14, and small size hands and bodies. If you are thinking about getting a musical instrument that your child can master, and become part of a band, you might want to consider a bass guitar. If you get a kids bass guitar, or any bass guitar, exactly what are you getting? There are a few differences between a bass guitar and a standard electric guitar. Any bass guitar has four (usually) to six strings. A bass guitar player is responsible for the lower clef notes in an arrangement. Since it is electric, it needs to have an amplifier to provide sound. A youngster will need a smaller instrument because if they are not comfortable, it will be more difficult for them to reach their potential. A smaller bass will fit them more comfortably so that they can focus on the music. Of course, your choices are a little more limited than a full size guitar, but the size advantage will make it well worth it.
Since when does a seven year old have all the answers? My daughter often tells me how life is. Sometimes she has me in stitches and I think to myself “if only the world was as sweet as she sees it!” My daughter assures me that many girls her age play guitar and that kids guitars are everywhere! Everywhere? I don’t know about everywhere but I will begin looking for them online. It has actually been pretty fun and I have enjoyed the variety of guitars for kids that are available!
My adorable daughter will however have to wait until June to get her cool little kids guitar because I don’t buy big gifts outside of Christmas and birthdays. My kids, (much to their chagrin) are well aware of this! I love my children to death but I will not spoil them. I have been a lover of music my whole life. I have sung in choirs for years. I learned to play guitar when I was twelve years old and even wrote some of my own songs. Some of the songs no one knows but me. Singing those songs puts me back in touch with some very good memories. Now my young daughter tells me that she too wants to play guitar and sing her own songs. I am delighted to hear this and want to support her in any way I can. Today they have so many more guitars for kids available then when I was her age.
After looking online, I have found several websites that I have bookmarked. I think I found a really good quality childrens acoustic guitar that she will love! Maybe we can even get her an early birthday gift. Now I just have to see if my husband is on board with this plan. I really believe that I have come full circle and it is a good feeling!
My daughter says she wants a guitar because she knows she has talent. She says she wants a red guitar because her room is red and red is her favorite color. As luck would have it, her birthday is in March and my mother is really excited, loves to dote on her grandchildren and says she will purchase a “red” guitar for her very favorite, (and only) granddaughter. Because my mother doesn’t do much of her own shopping anymore and does not have access to the internet, we will do the shopping for her. My husband says there are lots of guitars for kids available and he already has a really cute red one picked out.
I just hope that mom realizes that while this is so very kind of her, we will be the ones that will put up with the inevitable noise. I love music more than anyone but I do have my limits. I love my daughter and more importantly I want her to be happy, so if a red childrens electric guitar will make her happy then so be it!
Every year my husband and I try and come up with a “special” Christmas gift for each and every one of our children. We like to have at least one gift that when opened garners a genuine “thank you so much!” facial expression. We are getting our daughter Becky a series of horseback riding lessons, our middle son Tom, his own golf clubs, and Brian our youngest a childrens electric guitar! Yes I think Santa will have a lot of “goodies” on his sleigh this year!
I was telling my girlfriend Sally about my ideas and she about fell off her seat when she heard what we are getting for Brian. She says that now she is looking at kids guitars as the perfect gift for her son. I must admit how much fun it was to look at all the guitars for kids that are available . I also bought some learn to play guitar instruction books for Brian. Yes I think it will be a Merry Christmas for all!

I really believe in the importance of helping children harness their passion and feel that music is a wonderful outlet for our youngsters.
