Don’t Overlook The Amateurs!

One of my favorite things to do is attend concerts and musical performances locally. While many people only attend big ticket events with ‘A list bands’, I enjoy the intimacy of smaller venues with other lesser known artists. Although the stage show of a big name bands are amazing, there is something special about witnessing lesser known musicians.

While many performers insist that they are amateur guitar players or musicians, they often display an impressive musical prowess. Especially with the litany of music available today, fame is not necessarily indicative of a performer’s skill or potential.  Many musicians get started as children and guitars for kids are very affordable for the young performer. I love to watch a performer grow and that doesn’t always mean into the bright but ‘fleeting’ lights of fame.  Some of the best songs never make it to the radio!

You’re Only Young Once!

Over the past few months, we’ve discussed several guitar-playing tips and techniques that will help bring out the budding musician in your child. These techniques have been developed over time, and have been tested by various masters all over the world. But the critical element that can never be taught through any type of training involves creativity.

As a conscientious and involved parent of this young virtuoso, remember to allow your child act his or her age every now and then which could mean practicing rock songs rather than classical or jazz. It could also mean allowing your child to explore different types of musical styles that have yet to be described in any music book.  This free time will allow the child to gain a clear head and renewed enthusiasm as guitars for kids may just be the beginning of a life long love of music!

‘Encouraging’ Musical Pursuits

I was not aware that it was possible to buy a childrens guitar but my girlfriend Tanya said that she just bought one for her youngest son and it was really not that expensive at all.  This is very good to know!  I too have a young daughter who I truly believe would enjoy learning to play guitar.  On a whim I began looking yesterday at guitars for kids online while at work, (don’t tell my boss!) and I am thrilled at how many cool guitars are available for kids her age.  I’m so excited that I might even get one for myself!

My daughter has always seemed to LOVE music from day one but she is a bit on the shy side so I think this might be a hobby to bring her ‘out’ a little more.  As a mother I want to encourage her but not push her ‘too’ hard.  We will try out the guitar and if she doesn’t like it we will move on to something else and who knows, maybe I’ll start playing the guitar as a new hobby for me!

For the Love of Guitar!

My niece has spent many weekends with me for many years!  My brother is a single parent and often works long shifts on weekends.  My boyfriend and I are overjoyed to be a part of my niece’s life. She is such a “happy go lucky” and giving child that we practically consider one of our own.  My brother has played acoustic guitar throughout his life and still plays local gigs where my niece and I are often in the audience cheering him on!  As Christmas is approaching, my boyfriend and I are SO sure what we need to get Gabby this year, a childrens acoustic guitar!

My brother will be delighted because he is such a good father and only wants the best for his “little girl”.  He seems to know a lot about guitars for kids and can point us in the direction of some good places to look.  I would not be surprised if one day my niece joins her uncle and his buddies on stage!  I am very sure that a kids acoustic guitar will give my niece and our family more joy than ever imagined!

Rockin Out On Christmas Morning!

My little girl has been begging me for guitar lessons for quite some time now.  She will be turning eight in January and of course Christmas will be here before we know it!! I have begun looking at guitars for kids online.  She is a good kid and I think that she is excited about learning to play an instrument.  I even have somebody in mind to instruct her that my girlfriend used to teach her son.  My son plays electric guitar and my daughter has looked up to him for years.  We started him out with a beginner electric guitar and off he went!

I am happy when my children are happy as long as they keep their hobbies in perspective and live well balanced lives.  My husband is also very supportive.  Life isn’t always easy but we do try to take stock of the many blessings that we do have.  We look forward to future “jam” session with both of our musical children which may start as early as Christmas morning!!  We’ll see.

Honoring Our Child’s Musical Ability

As parents we need to be involved with our children and be aware to their unique skills and abilities as well as hidden talents.  Our young son has shown an interest in music since he was a toddler and would sing and hum to his heart’s content, in his crib, in the grocery store and would give a solo in church without being prompted,( and much to the dismay of others in the congregation).  He has shown some natural singing ability in his school choir, and now expresses an interest in learning to play guitar.  My wife and I agree that a beginner kids guitar might be the perfect gift for him!  We have already begun searching in earnest for guitars for kids

I spoke to my sister who says that she too bought a beginner kids guitar for her eldest daughter ands he claims that the quality of this guitar was first rate.  Even though she no longer plays  guitar as she is now away at college, she recommends the guitar highly!   I am not sure if my son will stick with the guitar but I know he has musical ability and I am happy to let him explore this love!   What else is a parent to do?

A Special Birthday Indeed!!!

Life is pretty good at our house and for the most part we are very blessed!!  Money is tight since my wife lost her job in April of this year despite the fact that she did get a severance pay and also receives unemployment.  So far she hasn’t had any luck finding another job but we remain hopeful.  Our very creative, humorous and fun loving daughter says that she really wants to learn to play guitar and says that if we get her a guitar for her birthday this coming month, she will be so happy that we won’t have to get her anything for Christmas.  I said to my wife that she must really want a guitar if she is willing to even forego Christmas gifts!! Of course she knows that come Christmas day we will get her something.

Since our daughter is only nine years old we will not get her an adult sized guitar but will instead begin searching for guitars for kids.  I know she will be thrilled beyond measure and as parents we aim to please just as long as our children learn to appreciate what they have and not take it for granted.  Our daughter will be pleased to get a beginner childrens guitar as my husband and I have recently discovered that they are not as expensive as we had originally thought.  Yes it will be a Very Happy Birthday indeed!

Coming Full Circle!!

I have been a large fan of music my whole life.  I have sung in many choirs over the years.  I learned to play guitar when I was only nine years old and even wrote some of my own songs.  Some of the songs no one ever heard me play!  Singing those songs puts me back in touch with some very fond memories and good feelings!  Now my young daughter tells me that she too wants to play guitar and learn to sing her own songs.  I am just ‘over the moon’ about this and want to support her in any way I can.   Today they have so many more guitars for kids available then when I was her age.

After looking online, I have found several websites that I have bookmarked.  I think I found some really good quality discount acoustic guitars that will fit our budget and that she will just love!  Maybe we can even get her an early birthday gift.  Now I just have to hope that my husband is on board with this plan.  I really believe that I have come full circle and it is an absolutely feeling!

Tips for Buying A Kids Guitar

Have you noticed that your child has an aptitude for music? Do they enjoy playing air guitar when they hear music?  Here are some important tips when choosing a guitar for your son or daughter. First, make sure the guitar is small enough for your kid’s body. Children under five don’t really have the ability to play a string guitar so you want to begin this age group with toy guitars that light up, or play music with easy to touch buttons. Once your child can graduate from these basic toys, you can “upgrade” to toy guitars with strings, amplifiers, and microphones.  Once your child gets to be 5 – 7 years old, you can purchase several different styles of guitars for kids. These guitars usually differ in size based on a fraction from the normal size (a 3/4 guitar would be larger than a 1/4 guitar)..

You can also purchase a kids electric guitar which have a much different sound and require an amplifier to obtain the full sound. Make sure your child will not be disturbing any neighbors as he/she rocks out. It is often a good idea to have your child learn to play guitar with a childrens acoustic guitar before purchasing an electric guitar.  Whatever you choose to do, remember learning an instrument won’t only be rewarding for your child but musical children also tend to have better attention spans and do better in school. Also playing an instrument will be a productive, social hobby that can prove to be very healthy in their developmental years and for many years to come!

Women!

As a father of three girls, I have certainly become educated about the opposite sex.  I’m not complaining mind you because I think it creates an interesting challenge for me.  Actually in some ways I think I have more patience and understanding for my girls than my wife does!    I’m sometimes known as the ‘mediator” in the family and try and keep peace in the family not only between all three daughters but my wife and my daughters as well.  I wonder how different things would be if I had sons?  After it’s all said and done I wouldn’t have it any other way, I really wouldn’t!

Our middle daughter has taken quite a liking to the guitar!  I must say, she gets this desire honestly, I too am a great enthusiast of the guitar and have played acoustic and electric guitar for many years!  She is more than positive that what she most wants for her birthday is a beginner electric guitar!  My wife has concerns about her beginning to play guitar so young, (our daughter will turn ten in August).  I assured her that she is old enough and that there are many manufacturers today that make good quality guitars for kids that are well within our price range!  Someone has to be the stabilizing force in the family!  While I might not have my wife totally convinced, at least she is willing to go online and look at kids electric guitars with me!  Wish me luck!
