As a parent you want your children to lead well rounded lives and be involved in extracurricular activities.  Many parents choose to get their children involved in learning how to play an instrument. In this regard, you need to consider enrolling your children in guitar lessons.  Guitars for children come in many shapes, styles and sizes so you are bound to find one that is suitable for your child! There are many benefits to enrolling your children in guitar lessons at an early age. One of the most basic benefits of allowing your child to take guitar lessons early in life is the fact that they will be able to start the process of learning guitar when it will be easier for them to learn. Research has demonstrated that children that take instrument lessons earlier in life normally are able to master that instrument more quickly and more effectively. Another benefit of exposing your child to guitar lessons at an early age is that they will be able to take part in an activity that they enjoy because children who are exposed to instruments at a very young age seem to really enjoy the whole process of learning to play.

Yet another benefit associated with guitar lessons is the idea that you will be exposing them to music and the arts which may help to broaden their appreciation of the arts.. You also want to keep in mind that many schools today have cut out music lessons and classes for youngsters so if you don’t expose your children to guitar lessons at an earlier age, your children may not have that option ever again in the future.  Another benefit that children enjoy by getting involved with guitar lessons is an expanded chance at socialization. Not only will your children be able to interact with the instructor but your children will also be able to interact with other students as well. Finally, by getting your children involved in guitar lessons, your children may also have the chance to perform. Performing can really enhance your children’s sense of self, self esteem and so forth.

There is no getting around the fact that teaching a child to learn to play an instrument is something that can potentially bring him or her a lifetime of joy and enrichment. However keeping a child interested in practicing can be a challenge.  You might want to consider the guitar for your child.  Guitars for children come in many different shapes, styles and varieties.  One type of children’s guitar to consider is classical guitar.  Classical guitar is a good choice for your child because it takes advantage of the allure of the rock star.  Almost every child is familiar with pop music and therefore would take quickly to learning to play pop songs giving him bragging rights to his or her friends. With classical guitar your child will learn the fundamentals of sound music theory and will focus on learning how to read sheet music. While doing this your child will also learn the basics of classical music.

It will probably be difficult for your child to lose interest in playing because while the classical guitar is a good instrument for learning theory, history, ability, and classical music, it is also an instrument that offers an incredible range of pieces to play in many genres.  He or she will be able to play pop, rock, easy listening, country, jazz, blues, or any other type of music as well. Because of this wide variety of music available to the student, he or she will be much more prone to continue practicing and continue playing. As the child grows and his musical tastes change, the classical guitar can accommodate these changes.   The classical guitar is also very portable and comes in half and three quarter sizes.  Classical guitars are usually less expensive than other types of guitars and often run between fifty to a hundred dollars for a first guitar.  Finally a classical guitar is quieter than other types of guitars and can be played in a room without the music being intrusive to other people in the home.

Playing In An All Chick Band!

My daughter wants to grow up and play in an all girl and one day.  When I think of chick bands from my era I think of bands like the Go Go’s and how while I was growing up they always looked like they were having so much fun.  Living the life of a band member can be quite a wild existence.  Of course my daughter is only ten years old and may just be going through a passing “phase” in her life.   I guess I need to calm down and just have fun with it!

The other day I went online for the fun of it and decided to start pricing guitars for children.  Man there are some really cute kids guitars out there that are not all that expensive and seem to be of good quality.  I am now more inclined to want to purchase a childrens guitar for my eager little musician.  Who knows this purchase may inspire me to want to start playing the oboe again, (yeah right!)

Nylon vs. Steel Stringed Acoustic Guitars

When choosing to play guitar as a hobby one must decide whether to purchase an electric, acoustic or even a classical guitar.  If you want your child to play guitar there are many guitars for children available and affordable.  You could begin with a kids acoustic guitar.  Acoustic guitars will cost less and will allow for a lot of practice.  There are two basic types of acoustic guitars: nylon-stringed and the steel-stringed. There are some people who would like to go with a nylon-stringed guitar since it would be easier on the fingertips. The strings are thicker and more flexible than steel. Steel strings can be pretty painful to play especially when the strings are taut.

The choice of guitar that you will purchase will actually depend on the music that you would like to play. Nylon strings are used for folk and classical music. Steel strings are best for rock, country and almost all other styles of music. Nylon strings produce a soft and classic sound of the guitar while the steel strings produce crisp and sharp sounds.  A common misconception about nylon guitars is that your fingers won’t get sore.  But that is just false. It is quite inevitable that your fingers get sore with both nylon and steel stringed guitars at the beginning.  Nylon strings are less dense than steel strings. Therefore they are a lot easier to push down to form the chord. Steel strings can be pretty painful to push down since they are thinner and more difficult to push down. It takes a lot of getting used to make the soreness go away. And it is important that you practice to make sure that your fingers get used to the pushing down of the strings.  Don’t give up  because that breaking in period is well worth it!

I have lived a good life.  I married young and have a good wife that has stood by me all these years.  We have three children, a son and two daughters.  Our son and older daughter now have children of their own.  Music has always been a big part of our family with all of my children playing musical instruments throughout their lives.  Out son still plays guitar at our church and at bars and coffee houses.  Now his nine year old son has developed that “itch” to learn to play guitar too. So my son and I are thinking of getting him an early birthday present and have begun looking for beginner childrens guitars!

Boy have times changed.  There is so much more to choose from. Now there are guitars for children that are specified for a child’s particular needs.  I know we will find the perfect beginner childrens guitar that my grandson will love! It is not difficult to instill a love of music into a child. Most children love to sing and dance so childrens guitars often make a perfect present. Learning to play any musical instrument takes time, patience and money. It might be important to arrange private lessons so your child can learn proper technique from the beginning.  A good teacher will insist that their student practice their chords before they begin to learn more advanced level songs. Guitars for children come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Childrens guitars are available in both acoustic and electric. Allow your child to pick one or the other and once they become more proficient in acoustic or electric guitar they can easily begin to learn the other.

If you need an excuse to buy that childrens guitar, research shows that children who are exposed to music lessons from a young age will grow up with a higher IQ.  Learning guitar can also aid your child when he learns to read in school.  It also helps to increase self esteem giving your child a sense of achievement when they master a particular sequence or song.  There are so many benefits including the joy you will experience watching your child accomplish something and seeing the joy on his or her face.

Finding a hobby helps combat depression

electric guitars for children oliviaI am a concerned father and a single parent.  I love my children immensely and would do anything to see them smile.  It’s been hard at times as my kids don’t have a mother in their lives but we all care enough about each other to see anything through.  My daughter Olivia suffers from depression.  I believe that she has inherited this from both her mother and I.  I have been in my own therapy off and on throughout the years and recently found a good competent therapist for Olivia.   At a recent session that included Olivia and myself the therapist recommended that Olivia pursue a hobby as part of her treatment.  I have been trying to get Olivia to do this for years but I think she is now more receptive to the idea since her therapist suggested it as well.

Olivia knows that my therapy has often been music as I have played acoustic and electric guitar in various bands and solo acts over the years.  I can’t believe we never thought of this before but Olivia also seems to have inherited my interest in the guitar.  She just informed me that she would like to play the guitar as a hobby like me.  I am thrilled and will begin looking specifically at guitars for children.  Olivia says she wants to play the kids electric guitar and I believe she may have a secret fantasy of becoming the next Hannah Montana.  So, it looks like I will try to focus on electric guitars for children.  Wish me luck!

guitars for childrenMy friend Bobby got the coolest birthday gift!  He is my best friend and we hang out most days after school.  He got a new guitar.  Now he is letting me play and I love it!  I just told my parents about it and they say not this year, we can’t afford it.  Bobby says that his parents got it somewhere on sale.  My mom says that I need to forget about it because it’s not going to happen, I’m not going to get a guitar.

I just came home from Bobby’s house.  We were playing the guitar and then Bobby went online and found the website that his parents bought the guitar from.  I hope that my parents will change their minds and see that guitars for children are not that expensive.   I guess I’ll have to save my allowance because if I really want a kids guitar, I’ll have to be the one to get it!
