When most kids think of playing the guitar, they dream of being the lead singer and/or axmen in ‘A list band’ that sells millions of albums. While this may be an attainable goal for some, for most it may just be just a ‘pipe dream’. In today’s world it has become quite competitive to make it as a lead guitarist, (however that shouldn’t deter aspiring artists). When parents are looking at electric guitars for children and considering what to purchase they might take a look at the bass guitar. Bass guitarists are often the ‘unsung heroes’ in a band and there is sometimes less competition for a bass guitarist than lead guitarist.
While the bassist rarely makes it to the spotlight, musicians and true music fans know that the bass line is the true pulse of a song. Taking the time to learn bass guitar can not only improve your prospects for a musical future, but it will also give you a greater overall appreciation for the intricacies of music
No matter what style of guitar one learns to play, eventually he or she will develop calluses on their fretting hand. Because the guitarist needs to apply significant pressure in order to play individual notes and chords on the fret board, calluses naturally develop. The finger tips become irritated and build calluses as a natural protector for the fingers.
Interestingly enough those calluses do more than just protect your fingers from developing painful blisters, they also aid in your ability to play the guitar. It is important to remember this as parents who are looking to buy kid guitars for their child, whether it be acoustic guitars for kids or electric guitars for kids. Over time the guitarist will forget all about their fingers and begin to think of the guitar as natural extension of their body. Some people have noted that calluses become more sensitive in colder weather.
Many parents do the best that they can to tray and instill discipline and structure for their children yet despite it all children often have limited attention spans. Kids need to continue to be challenged and engaged in learning to avoid loss of interest. With electric guitars for children practices aren’t always fun but a practice regimen is needed in order for a child to progress.
It’s always a good idea to try and mix things up every now and then to allow the child to display some creativity. Improvisation is a great way to add some variety to a song that a child already knows. Variety can be liberating as it encourages the creative energy to keep flowing. The eventual goal is to have your child learn which chords sound good in sequence and which ones fall flat.
Unfortunately there are too many people who hold the belief that that children can begin to learn to play the guitar with a normal sized guitar. A lot of parents believe that children will eventually ‘grow into’ a full sized guitar. Parents can choose from acoustic guitars for children and even electric guitars for children, regardless a guitar can be found to fit a child’s size and frame. In order to truly maximize their productivity and minimize the learning curve, a childrens guitar should be tailored to the unique specifications of each child. It is important to remember that he or she will be sitting still for the duration of the guitar lessons and frustration will more than likely set in if the guitar feels too large and difficult to manage.
As a general rule of thumb, any child age 11 or younger should start with a three-quarters sized guitar. The scale length is also a significant factor; this refers to the measurement of the neck of the guitar from one end to the other. When the frets are closer together, it’s much easier for young kids to form chords which are necessary building blocks when learning to play guitar.
When I was young my parents saw that I had some musical ability and presented me with an ultimatum: join the choir or learn an instrument. I was an extremely shy and awkward child and my parents thought that that music would help ‘bring me out’. And because I was so timid, the idea of standing in front of a large audience flexing my pipes was terrifying—so I opted for the latter. I didn’t have a lot of difficulty choosing the instrument because I had always had a fantasy of being a ‘Rock God’ and dreamed of playing electric guitar!
Fortunately for me, I grew u in the heyday of classic rock and I idolized musicians such as Roger Daltrey, John Lennon, and Eric Clapton. My parents, (who couldn’t wrap their heads around my generation’s music) were thrilled because they understood how much this type of music meant to me! They graciously helped me look at electric guitars for children and eventually we agreed upon a childrens electric guitar that started me on my journey! Despite the fact that I never achieved rock and roll stardom, learning to play helped me achieve an even greater love of the guitar and gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of music in general and yes, it did help me come out of my shell!
One of the most important ways of encouraging children and getting them excited about a new pursuit—whether it be educational, artistic or athletic—is to have worthy leaders to emulate. I have always encouraged my children to look to positive role models for inspiration and motivation when embarking on a new endeavor. So when my youngest son picked up the electric guitar, I suggested that he listen to some of the pioneers of rock.
I was excited and really enjoyed looking at various electric guitars for children, albeit a little nervous about the noise he would inevitably create. Luckily he developed an appreciation for some of the same guitarists that I love—as opposed to those heavy metal thrashers. In just a few months he has mastered quite a bit and has really developed in to quite an adept player.
I want my children to be involved in the hobbies that feel like the best fit for them. I must admit however that I am very thrilled when they have chosen some type of musical pursuit. Music has been the icing on the cake for both my wife and I. I grew up playing classical music on the violin and still play with the orchestra in my town and will sometimes even still perform at weddings and special events. My wife has played the harp and has performed in more types of venues that I can possibly remember. She doesn’t play much anymore but does teach part-time where she can live vicariously through her students! Our eldest daughter also plays classical violin and piano. My middle son has played the drums as well as the trombone in concert band. My youngest son seems to want to break tradition and be somewhat of a rebel in our family (but only in regards to classical music) and play the electric guitar!
My wife doesn’t seem to know want to make of this but I think we should honor his wish. He is only five years old and I think this could be a lot of fun! I have already begun looking at electric guitars for children. I am also going to purchase DVD’s and books for beginner guitar lessons. I think this will be fun and since Christmas is only 2 week away we better get a move on. I am confident however that on Christmas morning my son will have a cool guitar to jam on!
My wife told me that we must get our adorable little daughter a childrens electric guitar for Christmas! Her best friend just got her son one and my wife says it’s so cute and we just HAVE to get our daughter one this year! I have to admit that even though I wouldn’t have thought of it, the idea has really grown on me! My wife and I are big kids ourselves and we have already been having a ball looking at electric guitars for children online. Our nephew has been playing acoustic guitar for awhile and has recently formed a trio with two of his friends and they are hoping to start performing in coffee houses. I know our daughter looks up to him.
We have a lot of fun in our family and for that we are truly blessed. However someone has to run the finances. My wife and I will have to have a budget as we have a lot of people to buy for this Christmas. I must admit however that come Christmas, our daughter will be thrilled beyond belief when she sees the cool guitar Santa (i.e. her parents) have bought her!
Everything is so expensive these days! Just to make ends meet is hard enough let alone having some money left over to have some fun. My youngest son wants an electric guitar in the worst way! I would love nothing more than to be able to give him this special gift for Christmas but I am not really sure that it is in my budget either. I have checked in several music stores but nothing looks affordable at the moment.
I just spoke with a friend who told me that electric guitars for children are not as costly as I might think and that to look online might be my best bet. This is good news because while I will find something to get my son for Christmas that he will like, a really cool beginner kids guitar will make him so happy! I am now hopeful that my son will be able ‘to rock out’ like he’s always wanted to!
My son is a little ham and being the center of attention seems to be something he relishes. He has been telling my wife and I that he has dreams of being a rock star and has been going around the house playing “air” guitar. While we are not sure we really want this dream to come to fruition we can’t resist the temptation to indulge him just a little bit. I have decided that a kids electric guitar is in order
I think it is so cool that there are so many varieties and styles of electric guitars for children. I have been having a blast looking at what is available online. I found a kids guitar that I have to get and I think my wife is in agreement. Our son has a birthday on September 15th and we will present him with his childrens electric guitar at that time. I can hardly wait!
