Coping with ADHD

I wasn’t sure what to do when my daughter was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).   I already knew that she had a behavioral problem because to keep her still and to stay focused for more than five minutes seems like impossible.  Her teachers have given me similar feedback and suggested that I have her tested for ADHD.  I did so and wasn’t terribly surprised with the results.

I began taking her to a competent therapist who assured me that my child can still have a very normal life and actually possesses above average intelligence.   The therapist encouraged me to find to help her find an outlet to release all of her pent up energy.  When we discussed various options with my daughter which included: playing with a trampoline, learning to play the drums, or a becoming involved in softball or swimming, she chose the drums!  As we investigated drums for children, we chose a childrens drum set that we all adore!  Over time, I have begun to understand my daughter’s condition, and with the proper knowledge and support I know that I can raise her to become a functioning adult.

Learning to Keep the Beat!

Few people would debate the fact that a sense of rhythm is the most important skill an aspiring drummer can hope to develop.  Stage theatrics that drummers perform at concerts such as twirling their drumsticks without dropping them is exciting but has nothing to do with musical ability. The true test of a drummer’s mettle comes down to one basic question – can he keep the beat?

There are several methods that youngsters can use to improve rhythm while learning to play their kids drums.  Parents can find drums for children that are tailored to a kids size and physical agility. Children can learn to count out loud under their breath making it barely audible.  By doing this they can instill their own sense of rhythm in the same way a metronome does.  In time the child will learn to transfer this steady count that they have learned to some other less obvious way of keeping rhythm – such as tapping their toe.

Providing Maintenance for your Drum Head

For the most part drum sets can last for years with very little maintenance work required. What really matters most is the condition of the drum head, commonly referred to as the skin. It’s important for children to understand that the sound of their drums largely depends on the drum head, (i.e. whether or not the tension in the drum head is fully intact).

When you first notice indentions or cracks on the surface of drums for children, you need to swap out the skins. Sometimes tiny bumps form in the drum heads, and they will change the pitch of the drums so it is important to be aware of this.  In order to increase the longevity of a drum head, it is important to let your child know that the drums are meant to be hit right in the center, not outside along the frame.

Finding A Creative Means Of Expression For Your Child!

Like most four-year-olds, my son has more energy than I would like. While I love my son, there are times when I wish that he would just sit down and ‘chill’ for a few minutes. One of my tricks to induce a lull in his rambunctious behavior to find means for him to release his energy, (not always an easy task mind you).

Since he already is constantly banging on objects around the house, I decided to try to cultivate this passion of his and purchased him a set of drums for children.  After doing a pretty exhaustive search for drums for kids online I found a drum kit I knew that he would love! Now when he has too much energy, I simply tell him to go play his drum kit for a little while. Not only does he love playing the instrument, but it also provides him with a very important means of creative expression.

The Little Drummer Boy!

For the most part our family had a nice Christmas this year and Santa was rather good to the kids I must say, (strapped the budget a bit but that’s ok).  I can’t complain except that the kids drumset we bought for our son is such a hit that he wants to play the thing morning noon and nigh!.  I am glad that he is so happy and I feel good that my wife and I did our research when looking at drums for children.  I think however we need to find some leverage in order to curtail some of the noise.  I’m sure in time his enthusiasm may wane a bit, hopefully not die but just slow down a bit.

My wife says that she will deal with the situation by insisting that he keep his room clean and toys picked up and put away, (hmm not sure about that one).  I have always been a music enthusiast and I think his passion is just great!  I hope you and yours also had a nice holiday.  Happy 2011 everybody!

Juggling My Job As Santa With The Responsibilities Of Christmas!!!

My wife and I have literally become “professional jugglers” like most parents have.  We feel forced as many of you do to have that “multi-tasking thing” down!  Part of our juggling act this holiday season is to host Thanksgiving for our large family consisting of about 20 people, go on a  Christmas cruise the first week in December with my wife children and her parents, host an office Christmas party for my wife, and help my wife buy gifts for her large family and mine!  My wife usually does most of the planning and I basically do whatever she tells me on my never ending ‘honey do’ list. One of my tasks, she says is to choose a kids drum set to give to our son on Christmas day.  I actually like this assignment and will begin looking at drums for children on line.  I do believe that a childrens drum set will thrill our son BEYOND  belief!

A perusal of some local music stores and a search online should give me a lot to choose from regarding kids drum sets.  I’m sure that on Christmas morning our family will (like it or not) get to hear our son’s enthusiastic first beat of the drum!  I know I can’t wait!!

Bangin on Those Drums!!

My son’s birthday was last month and oh what a fun time it was for him.  Usually birthdays come and go and the excitement of gifts received starts to wane over time.  Before you know it  the novelty of new gifts wears off and the child is on to something else.  This is not the case with our young son!  We bought him a childrens drum set and if we let him, he would ‘bang on the drums’ all day long!!  It was one of the best investments we ever made!! There are so many totally cool drums for children available for today.   Despite the obvious noise, he seems to be developing some rhythm.  We are actually setting him up with some drum lessons next week.  He is quite happy about this.

Right now he is enjoying his beginner drums and we may get him a full drum set if he continues to enjoy the drums and show some real promise.  His joy is our joy!!  I guess as a parent I am so glad to see him have some passion and want to work on something which makes me want to go the extra mile for him!! Only time will tell.

Making Her Dreams Come True!!

So what will our daughter get for her birthday this year?  I know my daughter can’t wait to turn eight!  She has told me that the only thing she wants for her birthday this year more than anything else in “the whole wide world” is a kids drum set!   I thought, “Oh boy!”  Where am I going to start looking for childrens drum sets?  Of course as any parent knows the internet is a wonderful resource for just about anything.

My wife doesn’t think getting drums for our daughter is such a big deal.  Maybe she is right, since we will only be getting a childrens drum set we can probably find a good one that is pretty affordable.   Our friends are musicians and I know they can probably get us a good deal.  I bet there are some pretty cute drums for children that our daughter will really like.  Come November 3rd, I think we will have one happy child in our home!!

Bangin On the Drums ALL Day!!

Our son’s birthday is long over but oh the memories remain.  Most gifts we buy for our kids are loved when received but it isn’t too long before the excitement wears off and they’re onto something else!.  Not the case with our young son!  We bought him a childrens drum set and if we allowed him to, he would “bang on the drums all day”.  However despite the obvious noise, he seems to actually be developing some rhythm.  We are hoping set him up with some drum lessons very soon.  He is quite happy about this.

I think it is so cool that drums for children exist allowing kids to ‘try out’ their skills before purchasing the more expensive adult drum sets! Right now our son is enjoying his beginner drums and we may get him a full drum set if he continues to play.  My daughter still likes her Ipod but not with quite the same passion her brother has for his drums.  I’m still working on her!!  I guess as a parent I am so glad to see my son want to really work on something!

Livin Vicariously Thru My Kid!!!

I am an excited Dad who loves the fact that my kid will be seven in just a few weeks.  This is quite a thrill to everyone in the family but is truly the most exciting to our young son. He is a bit precocious and very ambitious you might say.  My wife sees a future doctor, lawyer, or businessman but I see a great musician!!.  Let’s start with the musician, shall we.   Our son Eddie like a lot of kids his age wants to bang the drums.  He thinks that this is very cool and to tell the truth, so do I.  I propose to my somewhat less enthusiastic wife that we start looking at drums for children .  I know that there are some very affordable and fun kids drumsets out there!!

We however need to get a move on as his birthday will be here before we know it.  I have already bookmarked some very good websites.  A buddy of mine bought his son beginner drums and says that for the most part it has been a lot of fun for the whole family.  I very much want my kid to succeed in life but along the way I want him to also have a blast!!!  A kids drumset should help that process!
