In addition to sports, one of the most rewarding activities a child can experience is learning how to play a musical instrument. I am going shopping next week and will begin looking for gifts for my daughter’s seventh birthday. I have some good ideas that I know she’ll like but this year I really wanted to get her something special. I wasn’t sure what that would be when suddenly it hit me one night while over at a friend’s house. My husband and I were having cocktails with friends of ours before going out to dinner several weeks ago. Before leaving for dinner we saw their youngest daughter showing her babysitter some new songs that she had learned to play on her kids guitar she had received from her parents this past Christmas. It was really quite an adorable site and the more I thought about it I think my daughter would absolutely love a small kids acoustic guitar like our friends’ daughter.
Because our daughter is so young and not very big, she would require a very small acoustic guitar. We could probably find some that are relatively inexpensive. I am also going to search online for discount kids guitars. I think that this will most definitely make for a special birthday and now I am really excited to begin shopping! Sometimes being a parent is more fun than one might think!
My son wants another guitar. We bought him a toy guitar for his birthday when he was three years old and he has long since outgrown it. Now he says he wants a “real” guitar! He wants to take lessons and play in a band one day just like his older brother. So my frugal wife who is never one to mince words says, “I am not buying one more crazy guitar!” I think I can work on her. She’ll come around. I know that there are a lot of very affordable and fun childrens electric guitars that our son could start taking lessons with.
Our kids have grown up with music so it’s no surprise that they’ve all shown interest in it. I am not going to stand in their way and will support them in any way I can. After all I too played acoustic and electric guitar as a youngster. My wife just told me that she bookmarked a website for me to see that has discount kids guitars! Here we go!

My dad lives with us and so my kids are very close to their grandfather. My mother has been dead for ten years now and for the most part my dad seems pretty happy living in our home. I really appreciate him being around now that my husband and I are separated. He is well aware that my eleven year old wants a kids electric guitar in the worst way! I’ve told dad that I’m not sure it’s in the budget. My older son told me recently that he found some discount kids guitars online and has bookmarked them for me to see.
My dad tells me not to worry that he will pay for it all. I think that is incredibly sweet but I also don’t want him to spoil the kids either. If we give him the kids guitar now it will have to be an early birthday gift. Over all I think he will be thrilled because he’s been wanting a crazy guitar for quite some time now! Life is far from perfect in our home but overall it is pretty good, we’re lucky!
With a big family you have a lot of birthdays. We just celebrated our son’s 16th birthday. We had a lot of fun and we got him a new guitar amp, guitar picks and gig bag that he seemed to really love. But more importantly, he is so excited that he will be driving soon!, (I’m not sure his parents share this enthusiasm!) Now our younger son wants to follow in his big brother’s footsteps. He too wants to play guitar and wouldn’t you know it, he just happens to have a birthday next month. My wife said “no way” a guitar is out of the question. I however feel that I can refute some of her complaints, (i.e. cost). After looking online yesterday I found some discount kids guitars that I think our young rocker may love!
My wife is still not totally onboard but I think we can tackle the cost as well as the inevitable noise that will ensue. If a kids guitar will make him happy than I think we should support him. I believe that the family that rocks together stays together. Stay tuned!
What are we going to do? Christmas isn’t too far away and we are trying to figure out how we can afford nice gifts for our kids. We pride ourselves on being able to get them most things that they want within reason. It is a little tougher this year since my husband got laid off in September. We will simply have to economize the best we can. Jason wants an electric guitar and that just seems like an impossibility this year! My husband says that we may be able to afford a kids guitar after all because he has just heard of some really good discount kids guitars available online.
I hope we can also find some other discounted items for our other two children. The economy has made things tough and one of the best values we can teach our children is that quality family time means the most, gifts or not. I hope that this will be the best Christmas ever as we all just enjoy being together!
If your child is interested in playing the guitar, don’t automatically say “no” just because you think all guitars are expensive. It’s true that adult-sized guitars can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars, but kid-sized guitars are much less expensive – under $100 in some cases. Guitars for kids are much better for kids to learn on anyway, since they are smaller, lighter and every part of the guitar fits their hands. They also come in fun colors, patterns and styles, so you can find one that fits your child’s personality.
If you don’t want to spoil your child by giving him whatever he wants, try a collaborative method of purchasing the guitar. Make a deal with your child that he can “pay” for half by doing a certain amount of chores or by earning money through babysitting or a paper route. This will teach your child about work, responsibility, and earning and managing money, as well as give him a sense of pride in knowing that he earned his guitar. I am a single mother working hard to raise my two sons, (ages 11 and 14). My younger son, Christopher has Attention Deficit Disorder.
