Like Father Like Son

My son wants another guitar.  It seems like yesterday that we bought him a toy guitar for his third birthday and I must admit that he has really outgrown it.  Now he says he wants a “real” guitar!   I think he looks at our next door neighbor who plays lead guitar in a local band and has received a lot of accolades.  He is now old enough to learn on an actual ‘playable’ guitar so my hesitant husband and I will start looking at some beginner childrens guitars.

For the most part our kids have grown up with music so it’s no surprise that they’ve all shown an interest in it.  I am not going to stand in their way and will support them in any way I can.  After all I played the piano for many years and my husband forgets the ‘guitar lovin days’ of his youth.  Actually my husband just told me that he bookmarked a website for me to see that has discount kids guitars!  Well ok!

Keep that guitar tuned!

When most people envision playing the guitar, they might think of a group of people sitting around a campfire singing songs well into the night or a group of casual friends humming familiar tunes with a group of friends while being accompanied by a guitar.  Some people may even see themselves as the player of the guitar however no matter the situation, a guitar will need to be tuned.  It is important that every musician knows how to tune their guitar properly.  Here are some tips to keep in mind when tuning your guitar:

First try to listen while playing a note. When the note is still ringing try humming the note. Continue to play the note until you’ve managed to keep pitch with your voice. Play the second note using the very same technique, if your voice is higher, then the second note is higher. If your voice gets lower than the second note is lower. Make the necessary adjustments to the notes until they both sound the same. This process may take longer with less expensive adult sized guitars and discount kids guitars.  However before you know it you’ll be able to tell the difference between the pitches without having to hum them.

What Makes It A Kids Guitar?

If you’ve looked at kids’ guitars online, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that they are shorter than full sized guitars. There are two reasons for this; one is blatantly obvious and the other not so much.  Obviously children are smaller in stature than adults, so they will need a scaled down instrument. Just lifting and holding a normal-sized guitar properly could create many problems for a child and perhaps even discourage further musical development.

The typical childrens guitar features a shorter scale length, making it much easier to play. This allows the frets to be spaced closer together to accommodate a child’s smaller fingers. In addition, the string tension can be reduced in a short-scale guitar without having a detrimental effect on its tone.  A longer scale length requires tighter tension, making that the strings are tougher to press down.  Parents may want to consider discount kids guitars to keep cost down for a child who is just learning to play guitar and unsure if he or she wants to continue or not.

The Importance of Minding Your Tone!

After your child is more comfortable playing basic guitar chords, they can begin to turn on the amp and focus on tone while they play. There are several important factors that affect guitar tone that you need to know which include: the brand of ax, the type of pickups, the pick and the string gauge.   For the most part, Classic country musicians have chosen to use Fender guitars because of their light, airy twang. Hard rockers and musicians active during the Grunge era have tended to prefer a darker, more menacing tone as embodied by Gibson.

It is very worthy to note that discount kids guitars are available for purchase online that replicate the tone of their more expensive counterparts.  The string gauge refers to the thickness and heaviness of the guitar strings. As noted earlier, the lighter the strings are, the ‘happier’ and ‘twangier’ the tone.  In today’s times most guitar pickups are designed to eliminate the buzzing sound that are inherent in older models.

A Win/Win for Father and Daughter!

Last summer I decided to try to teach my daughter how to play guitar. Since I have been playing for over 30 years, I figured that I would be able to impart my knowledge without too much difficulty.   Because money is tight I did a search online for discount kids guitars and found a guitar for my daughter that was more than suitable.  It turns out however that playing the guitar is much easier than teaching it, and after a few weeks of our lessons, it was evident that she wasn’t making as much progress as I had hoped.

Instead of doling out hundreds of dollars on professional lessons, I decided to try our luck with guitar lesson videos. After just a few hours practicing with the video, she already had learned much more than she had when I was teaching her!  Now that she has some of the basic knowledge under her belt, I have been able to give her a few pointers that now make sense and she can actually use, a win/win for both father and daughter!

Purchasing Your Child’s First Guitar

When purchasing your child’s very first guitar there are many things to consider.  One of the first things to consider is the need to make sure that the instrument is the correct size for your child. Many models are too big for children and will inhibit their ability to reach the proper tabs and fingerings. For instance there are many electric guitars for kids available today for children of all sizes.

The next thing to consider is price. Since this is your child’s first instrument, it is probably wise to  invest in discount kids guitars so that they have something to experiment with and see if they like.  Just because the price isn’t high doesn’t mean that you have to skimp on quality; there are many excellent models available that don’t carry an excessive price tag.

What Will Be On Santa’s Sleigh?

My son wants an electric guitar in the WORST way!  He assures me that Santa has a REALLY big sleigh this year and is sure to have plenty of room for a kids guitar!  What my son may not realize is that we are still in a recession and Santa too may be affected by this, (parts may just be too expensive  this year).  Perhaps this elf better begin looking at some discount kids guitars

My brilliant husband seems to be amused by it all.  So in addition to looking for Ipods, a new Wii and inline skates, it looks like a beginner kids guitar just might make it onto Santa’s sleigh after all!  Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

When my husband gets excited about something he pulls all out all the stops and its no holds barred!  He recently told me that after having a heart to heart talk with our young and curious son about what he wants most for Christmas, our son said an electric guitar is a must.  After a thoughtful but most enthusiastic pause, my eager to please husband said that Santa would have a kids guitar on his sleigh without a doubt!  My husband went to work immediately to find the best and fanciest kids electric guitar in town and online!  The ever practical part of me said “Wait a minute buster!”  And so I began my search for discount kids guitars!  The results actually looked pretty promising.

We have a lot of planning and budgeting to do to get ready for Christmas this year and a childrens electric guitar may in fact fit the budget!  I am all for supporting my children as long as we live within our means.  My husband and I will probably continue to battle over finances but I am glad that in time we are usually able to work things out!   Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!!

As a mom I can honestly say that I am very content.  Now that our daughter’s tenth birthday celebration is over we can relax a bit until the holidays begin.  Overall we had a really nice Christmas and a peaceful new year!  It is always great to get friends and family together.  Both my parents and my husband’s parents go crazy over their grandkids and our kids always can’t wait to see them!!  In particular, we all really liked watching my daughter go “crazy” over the beginner childrens guitar we gave her for her birthday.  To say she loves this gift would be an understatement!

My husband and I really enjoyed looking at various beginner childrens guitars and now know that our research has really paid off.  Because our daughter’s birthday is so close to Christmas we needed to shop within our means. After searching for discount kids guitars we were quite impressed with what we saw.  She seems to already have learned some chords from her learn to play guitar DVD.  She loved all of her other gifts but hands down, the guitar was her very favorate!

The Family That Rocks Together!!

With a big family you have a lot of birthdays and they seem to come up faster than you can turn around!  We just celebrated our son’s 18th birthday.  We had a lot of fun and we got him a new guitar amp, guitar stand and gig bag that he seemed to really love.  But more importantly, he is so excited that he will be going off to college next year!, (I’m not sure his parents always share his enthusiasm!)  Now our younger son wants to follow in his big brother’s footsteps.  He too wants to play beginner guitar and as life seems to go, he too has a birthday in another month.  My husband said “no way” another guitar is out of the question.  I however feel that I can appease some of his concerns, (i.e. cost).  After looking online yesterday I found some discount kids guitars that I think our young rocker may love!

My husband is still not totally onboard but I think we can tackle the cost as well as the inevitable noise that will ensue. I mean come on, we have to let him explore his creativity somehow!! If a kids guitar will make him happy than I think we should go for it!!  I believe that the family that rocks together stays together.  Amen!!
