Getting that Cool Guitar!

My oldest son, now fourteen has been playing guitar now for almost six years.  He had been begging us to get him an electric guitar and we finally relented and got him a childrens electric guitar.  He has pretty much played it to death and now he wants a new guitar.  He has shown me some pictures of some cool guitars and says that if we get him a new guitar now we will not have to get him a birthday gift when he turns fifteen in June.  My husband and I do feel that it is worth the investment since he has shown such passion for the “crazy guitar” this far.

I only insist that in his quest to be a “Rock God” he complete his studies and attend college because I think life is tougher these days without a college degree.  He “reluctantly” agrees to this and I think he feels that going to college is more of an opportunity to play in a really cool band and get as many gig as possible on his way up the ladder.  Oh well, what is a parent to do?  At least my child does have interests in life and thus far has been a pretty good student without a lot of effort.

sweetheart childrens electric guitarsMy daughter has been a fan of Hannah Montana for several years.  She has informed us that she knows that she can sing like Hannah Montana and also REALLY wants to learn to play guitar.  My wife is all for it and says that even if this interest is just a phase, she thinks we should honor it.  Our daughter’s birthday is March 14th and my wife says that she has begun looking at childrens electric guitars online.  She has bookmarked some good websites and wants me to check out some really cool guitars that she believes our daughter will love.

So we are going to get her involved in our church choir.  She is excited about this but says that it’s rock music that she really wants to sing.  I guess it will be fun for the whole family to listen to our daughter sing and play her childrens electric guitar!  I am quite sure that our daughter will have a very happy birthday!

The Definition of “Cool” Guitar

greenwoodThe term “cool” is highly subjective, and nowhere is this more apparent than in popular music. While some groups think that bands like Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback represent the pinnacle of coolness, others simply view them as sellouts. Conversely, some people see bands like Radiohead and of Montreal as being too irrelevant to be cool, while others see them as cutting edge avant-garde musicians.

As can be imagined, the definition of a cool guitar player varies as much as the distinct tastes in music that people hold. Some enjoy the breakneck playing that is the trademark of heavy metal, others the minimalistic nature of acoustic music. Although defining “cool” is often a task of futility, the beauty is that every person is free to define it for themselves.

The Indefatigable Jimmy Page

crazyDuring the 70’s there was one band that towered over all of the others: Led Zeppelin. Arising from the remnants of The Yardbirds, the band featured the premier musician at virtually every position in the band. While all of the members are now famous—or infamous depending on whom you consult—the guitarist Jimmy Page stands alone in rock lore.

Not only was Page the most prolific guitarist of his time, but he also added to his allure due to his associations with magic and the occult. During concerts, Page would employ an assortment of crazy guitars and accessories to enhance his performance. From using a bow to play his guitar to the famous double-necked model used for the epic “Stairway to Heaven,” Page’s stage performances have become a thing of legend.

little fart childrens electric guitarsThe wonderful sound of music has always filled our home.  I play the organ for the church choir and my husband plays the bassoon at various functions in our community.  My oldest daughter plays the cello in her school’s orchestra.  Out youngest son has just informed us that he too wants to play an instrument and just knows that we will be thrilled about this.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would want to play electric guitar!!!!  I was very unsure about this but my husband seems to think that it’s a great idea and it he wants to play so badly then he will receive proper instruction.

My husband has told me that he knows where to find some really good childrens electric guitars.  He thinks he can get a really good deal on some cool guitars that our son will really love!  I feel however that if he is going to get a kids electric guitar then he is going to learn proper technique (i.e. a good instructor and some learn to play guitar books and DVD’s)  As long as we can live with a peaceful noise level in our home then I guess I’m game!

ivan childrens acoustic guitarsMusic has been a part of our family for more years than I can remember.  Both of my parents sing in our church choir and my parents also perform in a singing chorale throughout the year.  All of us kids have been exposed to many different types of music.  My kid brother seems to want to play the guitar and I think my parents are going to help my brother Ivan follow this interest.  They told me that they have been checking out different types of childrens acoustic guitars.  Ivan is going to be SO excited on Christmas morning.

So now that my parents have warmed up to this idea, maybe they will consider getting me a beginner electric guitar.  I have been dying to get one for many years and now my parents see how affordable they are.  I can see it now, one day Ivan and I will “jam” together on our very cool guitars!  Well maybe in a few years.   We’ll see.

guitar instructional book I am fifteen years old and my parents just bought me a beginner acoustic guitar.  I couldn’t be happier as it has been a dream of mine to learn to play the guitar for many years!   I am SO thrilled and now I am hoping to save up enough money to for a good instructor!  I just ordered a guitar instructional book online from a really good website!

I know that I want to go to college but I am also hoping to work on a musical career!  I can really see myself and couple of my buddies “jamming” at coffee houses with our cool guitars!  I also LOVE to sing and have a pretty good vocal range.  I look forward to the years ahead and with my “budding” musical career!

Born to Rock!

Pete_TownshendMy son, Nick will definitely be in a band one day.  I see the signs already.  He wants to grow his hair long, wears a dew rag on his head, picks up everything in sight pretending it is a guitar, hums various rock tunes constantly, and even has a swarm of girls that follow him!  Lately he seems to want to imitate my idols, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. He has the Pete Townshend guitar slide down pat! It is fun for me to watch and I want to support him with his passion but hope it is not the only thing in life that interests him.

Nick’s birthday is in November and Christmas is the following month.  My wife Sandra says we HAVE to get him an electric guitar for either his birthday or Christmas.  I must admit that there are some very cool guitars out there for adults and kids!  I have always wanted an electric guitar  and might buy one for myself so I can “jam” with Nick.  There are some good deals out there so I don’t think it will strain the budget too much.  My only concern is that Nick doesn’t try to “smash” his guitar the way Pete Townshend used to!
