Daddy’s Little Girl!!!!!!

My daughter and I have always been close.  Even though she is only seven years old, I think she is rather intuitive for her age.  She has grown up listening to me play guitar and it has always been a special bonding time for us, she loves to see me play.  I have actually watched her pick up a tennis racquet and pretend to pluck and strum the strings only to stub her thumb (which resulted in some tears and some cries of “awwww!” but the incident still didn’t deter her).  So I said to my wife that we needed to honor her passion and get her a beginner acoustic guitar for her eighth birthday.

I am having a lot of fun looking and searching for childrens guitars.  My wife has been looking as well and we will soon compare notes and come up with a childrens guitar that is of good quality, affordable and irresistible to our young budding musician!   I might even be more excited as my daughter!

Surviving The Changing Identities Of Childhood and Adolescence!

What can a parent do?  One day our daughter wants to be an actress, another day a ballerina, another day a race car driver, (over my dead body)!!!  I know that all kids have their whims and trying different activities is part of growing up and learning who they are as individuals but as parents, it’s hard to know sometimes when to push and when to let go.  As of late however, our darling daughter has expressed interest in becoming a musician, (mainly a guitar player in a rock band)!!!!  She has grown up watching her cousin play bass guitar in a local rock band and I really believe that Jennifer wants to follow in her cousin’s footsteps!  Jennifer does love her cousin and has always looked up to him! Throughout the years she enjoyed playing on his guitar while receiving instruction from him.

So as the holiday season is approaching I am giving serious consideration to purchasing a quality kids electric guitar for my daughter.  I have a lot of  support from my wife in this venture!  I recently became aware that there is truly a market for childrens guitars and I am hoping to find one that is a good fit for us.  Stay tuned as I search for the perfect childrens guitar!

My son is just too cute!  Maybe I’m a bit biased but can a mother really be objective?  He is a bit of a natural ‘ham’ and being the center of attention seems to come easily to him.  Show and Tell has to be the best part of school for him and he is excited to show the class his kids electric guitar that we bought him for his birthday two weeks ago!

On Friday he is planning to go to school with his little cowboy hat and jam with his new cool guitar in front of the whole class!  My husband and I found so many interesting childrens guitars available that we may just get one for our younger son!   I am looking forward to Friday and plan on getting lots of pictures and who knows maybe my husband and I will get some more kids guitars for ourselves!

Like Daughter Like Mother?

Little girls are so funny these days.  In this day and age it’s no longer playing house with friends or playing with dolls for hours on end.  I think it’s great.  Women’s lib. in the 70’s started the change toward more equal play.  Now it’s gone from playing kickball and dodge ball with their male counterparts to jamming on their cool kids guitars like little rock stars!  My kids is no exception with this current trend.  She wants me to get her a childrens electric guitar for her upcoming birthday in August.

As I peruse through various websites online that feature childrens guitars I am pretty impressed with what I see making me wish I was her age again!  Hey, maybe I’ll get one for myself!  I have no problem with the “Rock God” stage as long as she leads a well balanced life!  They’re only young once and as I too re-experience my youth, I may just “rock out” with her too!

All You Need Is Love

My niece and nephew mean the world to me.  My brother is a single father and I have been a bit of a surrogate mother to his two children.  I couldn’t be happier as I think his kids are adorable.  I see the kids quite often as they come to my house and I come to theirs.  Birthdays and Christmas never go unacknowledged.   If anything I have a tendency to spoil the kids and my brother sometimes has to set limits with me.  My adorable little nephew will turn six in two weeks and I very much want to get him what I know he really wants, (a kids electric guitar!)  My brother is very unsure about this but I told him that childrens guitars are not as expensive as he thinks and if we go in on it together it will bring the cost down.

A search online has helped convince my brother that I was right, kids guitars are not as costly as he thought.  I think we may have even found the childrens guitar that we want which is good because his birthday is only two weeks away!  Money and materialism cannot replace the fact the kids don’t have a mother but there is plenty of love to go around in our family!

Discovering The Guitar!

I was not aware that one could buy a childrens guitar but my buddy Sam said that he just bought one for his youngest son and it was really not that expensive at all.  This is very good to know!  I too have a young son who I really believe would enjoy learning to play guitar.  On a whim I began looking at childrens guitars online and I am thrilled at how many cool guitars are available for a kid his age.  I might even get one for myself!

My son seems to really like music but he is a little shy so I think this might be a hobby to bring him “out” a little.  As a father it can be hard sometimes to find the line between encouraging and not pushing.  We will try out the guitar and if he doesn’t like it we will move on to something else and who knows, maybe I’ll start playing the guitar!

Aunt Sally

My Aunt Sally has been like a grandmother to my children for many years.  My own mother for various reasons has not been able to be there for me or my children in any kind of parental way so I have always considered Aunt Sally my mother.  She was always there for me growing up and now that I have children she loves nothing more than to “spoil” them to death!   She knows that my young daughter has a birthday coming up and as one would expect, Aunt Sally is BIG on birthdays!

I told Aunt Sally that I know what my daughter wants the most this year and she literally about fell off her chair!  A kids electric guitar tops her list and Aunt Sally would like to purchase this but doesn’t even know where to begin.  I will do the leg work and Sally will buy the guitar.  I have begun my search for childrens guitars with my daughter’s wishes in mind.   I think this is fun and I know my daughter will be SO happy to get a childrens guitar from her beloved Aunt Sally.   I am so looking forward to my daughter’s special day!  Life hasn’t always been easy but at least there’s always been plenty of love to go around!

The Importance Of Choosing A Hobby For ADHD

As a single father life is difficult sometimes.  My oldest son, (who is in the third grade) has been diagnosed with ADHD.  He has received testing from the school psychologist who confirmed this diagnosis.   I have him in counseling and he does see a psychiatrist.  Lately I have been attending some of the counseling sessions with my son.  The therapist has been recommending that my son needs more structure at school and at home.  She also feels that youngsters with ADHD like my son could really benefit from a hobby, as it provides something to help focus attention, learn a skill, and have good healthy fun.

I had a discussion with my son and he told me what he most wants is to learn how to play electric guitar!  I wasn’t sure about it at first but then I realized that it might be kind of fun and decided to begin searching for kids electric guitars.   My son and I actually had a lot of fun looking at various childrens guitars and finally agreed on a kids electric guitar that looks fun, very cool and affordable!   Having ADHD is always a challenge especially as a single parent, but it keeps me on my toes and overall I love being a parent!

Dear Aunt Betty!

My kids just LOVE their aunt Betty who has spoiled them rotten ever since they were babies.  Aunt Betty spoiled me too but her doting has increased incrementally since I was a little girl.  This makes me happy but I just hope that they don’t develop any sort of sense of self entitlement.  Aunt Betty knows that our middle son Adam has a birthday coming up next month.  Adam of course was not a bit shy to inform his beloved aunt Betty that he wants a really cool electric guitar for his birthday just like his friend Eddie has!  Aunt Betty is more than pleased to do this but doesn’t have a clue where to get this guitar.

My husband says that because Adam is only eight we really need to get him a childrens guitar. My husband says that he has been spending his lunch breaks researching childrens guitars online.  He says that he has bookmarked some sites for me to look at and will order one that Aunt Betty can get for Adam’s birthday.  I think Adam will be really pleased, (especially since the guitar will have come from Aunt Betty).  I must admit that it is quite fun to live vicariously through my children!

Carrying On the Family Tradition

823037Ever since I was 11 years old I’ve had a passion for playing the guitar. While I have gone through countless instruments during my playing career, I’ve kept some of my favorite models to pass along to my children. Now that my daughter is eight, she is beginning to inquire as to when she will be allowed to pick up an instrument.

Before I impart some of my most cherished possessions, I want to be sure that they will be properly taken care of. It’s not that I don’t trust her, but I know that children’s things have a tendency to take a good deal of wear and tear. I’ve decided to give her one of my first guitars for her next birthday, although I will look into some guitar cases for kids before I hand it down.
