Dear Aunt Betty!

My kids just LOVE their aunt Betty who has spoiled them rotten ever since they were babies.  Aunt Betty spoiled me too but her doting has increased incrementally since I was a little girl.  This makes me happy but I just hope that they don’t develop any sort of sense of self entitlement.  Aunt Betty knows that our middle son Adam has a birthday coming up next month.  Adam of course was not a bit shy to inform his beloved aunt Betty that he wants a really cool electric guitar for his birthday just like his friend Eddie has!  Aunt Betty is more than pleased to do this but doesn’t have a clue where to get this guitar.

My husband says that because Adam is only eight we really need to get him a childrens guitar. My husband says that he has been spending his lunch breaks researching childrens guitars online.  He says that he has bookmarked some sites for me to look at and will order one that Aunt Betty can get for Adam’s birthday.  I think Adam will be really pleased, (especially since the guitar will have come from Aunt Betty).  I must admit that it is quite fun to live vicariously through my children!

Letting Your Child Experience The Joy Of Guitar Playing!

If your child expresses an interest in learning to play guitar and asks for lessons than chances are they will follow through and will want to practice what they learn.  Age is not always the absolute deciding factor to determine a person’s interest in wanting to learn. A lot of parents are the ones deciding upon lessons. So, if your child is the one who has the interest, that’s a good start. Most children under the age of six don’t yet have the aptitude necessary to learn to play childrens  guitar.  There can always be exceptions but not usually.  You can spend some time with your child yourself and call it music appreciation. Dance and play with them to music. They will develop coordination and appreciation for music. And one added benefit, they get to spend time with you.  Today there are many different types of kids guitars available.   You can even by amplifiers and guitar cases for kids for the complete package.

If you need to have your child supervised and you want it to be on the theme of music, guitar lessons might be a choice you want to make. If you want your child to just have some fun and do something interesting, you may well feel that it is worth the investment. If you are looking at seriously getting a head start on your child’s musical development getting them to learn proper technique from the start may be essential.

Encouraging Musical Pursuits

It is not difficult to instill a love of music into a child. Most children love to sing and dance so childrens guitars often make a perfect present. Learning to play any musical instrument takes time, patience and money. It might be important to arrange private lessons so your child can learn proper technique from the beginning.  A good teacher will insist that their student practice their chords before they begin to learn more advanced level songs. Guitars for children come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Childrens guitars are available in both acoustic and electric. Allow your child to pick one or the other and once they become more proficient in acoustic or electric guitar they can easily begin to learn the other.

If you need an excuse to buy that childrens guitar, research shows that children who are exposed to music lessons from a young age will grow up with a higher IQ.  Learning guitar can also aid your child when he learns to read in school.  It also helps to increase self esteem giving your child a sense of achievement when they master a particular sequence or song.  There are so many benefits including the joy you will experience watching your child accomplish something and seeing the joy on his or her face.

Emulating the Guitar Gods

When I was little my parents presented me with an ultimatum: join the choir or learn an instrument. As a rather timid child, the idea of standing in front of droves of people and flexing my pipes was terrifying—naturally I opted for the latter option. For me, the decision as to what type of instrument to play was simple; I was enthralled with rock music and had always dreamed of playing the electric guitar.

Growing up in the heyday of classic rock music—as it is referred to now—I idolized axmen like Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. My parents were familiar with my infatuation and satisfied my rock and roll urges by purchasing my own childrens electric guitar. Although I never achieved rock and roll stardom, playing the guitar gave me a greater appreciation for the music that I already loved.

kiddo childrens acoustic guitarsIt is not difficult to instill a love of music into a child. Most children love to sing and dance so children’s guitars make a perfect present. They are light, portable and more fun to play than the recorder. Learning to play any musical instrument takes time, patience and money. You should arrange private lessons for your child so that they can learn proper technique from the start. Starting to play an instrument young is a great way to hone your child’s “ear” for music. A good teacher will insist that their pupil practices their chords etc as otherwise they will not get to the next level of playing songs.

There is a wide variety of children’s guitars out there. Some people prefer the sound of an electric guitar. Kid’s electric guitars come in two sizes. Others prefer to start with a child’s acoustic guitar and there are many quality childrens acoustic guitars available. Some prefer the hybrid of an electric acoustic guitar but I would suggest that you start with one or the other and not both. Your child is much more likely to practice the one they have a preference in so why not start there?  If you need an excuse to buy that children’s guitar, research shows that children who are exposed to music lessons from a young age will grow up better prepared for life. It not only appears to improve IQ but also helps with reading. It can increase self esteem as it gives children a sense of achievement when they master a particular sequence or song.

Learning from Your Mistakes

hannaHave you ever listened to a recording of your own voice? Answering machine messages, home movies and professional interviews all offer opportunities to listen to one’s own voice being played back. In some cases the immediate effect is embarrassment, since we never sound exactly the way we think we do in our own mind. However, recording one’s singing voice and listening to it later can prove constructive for a recording artist.

Beginning guitar players can take advantage of the same technique when they practice. The best part is that the quality of the recording device doesn’t make much difference. There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on a pricy recorder when any old model will do. The important thing is that the children learn to identify their mistakes through listening to their own work on kids guitars.

kids guitar lessons 11I just bought my daughter a really cute kids guitar.  She loves it and I am having so much fun watching the joy it really seems to be bringing her!  She has been playing her childrens guitar for several years now and it may be soon time to get her another one!  That’s ok because I am amazed at how many quality but cheap electric guitars are available for children!

It is my belief that she is now ready for kids guitar lessons so not only will I get her a good instructor but also some instructional books and DVD’s.  I think that despite the economy, it will be a good Christmas in our household!  So now I am wondering what Santa will have on his sleigh this year?, hmm maybe a guitar for Dad as well?   We shall see!

The benefits of learning to play an instrument

learning guitar, josiahWe recently purchased a childrens guitar for our son Josiah.  We are glad we purchased this as he is quite an eager student of the guitar.  In addition to finding a very competent instructor for Josiah, we have also found a really good learning guitar instructional DVD for him as well.  We will give this to him for his birthday next week.

We were on the fence about getting him a kids guitar because we thought that his playing it might get in the way of him doing other things, (i.e. schoolwork) but this has not been the case at all.  Instead he seems to be more focused and disciplined not just about playing his cool guitar but also being more thorough in other areas of his life.   I am a bit surprised but I couldn’t be more pleased!  I think having your child learn how to play an instrument can often have many unforeseen benefits!

kids electric guitars frankieMost people like the sound of a good guitar.  I am no exception.  I want to share this love with the people in my life.  My best buddy Eric’s son Frankie seems to share my passion.   When I am at their house we often “jam” on Eric’s guitar.  I am going to look for my own electric guitar so I can live out my childhood “rock star” fantasy.

I am trying to convince Eric that a childrens guitar would be “perfect” for Frankie.   I told Eric that we could look online for kids electric guitars.  I think I may have him sold on the idea that not only it is a good investment but could help him learn a skill that he will truly enjoy!    Maybe we’ll even form our own band.

The Slide Guitar Technique

Duane Allman’sIn the last year or so, I’ve tried to expose my son to the music that was so influential during my formative years. I try to be open-minded, but it just seems that the majority of today’s music has lost its organic roots, trading them in in favor or slick, computerized production techniques. My favorite album – and one that has grown on my son as well – is “At Fillmore East,” a record recorded live by the Allman Brothers Band in the early 1970s.

Duane Allman’s masterful slide guitar playing technique inspired me to pick up a childrens guitar in my youth. He utilized an empty medicine bottle to create a mellow, soothing sound that just cannot be attained with a metal slide. Though I was never able to perfect Allman’s technique myself, I did become rather proficient at playing the traditional way. I’ll be passing those skills on to my son.
