My seven year old little hippie!

Our son seems to show a bit of a wild streak already at the age of seven.  He seems to want to run barefoot, climb trees and wear tie dyed shirts like his older brothers.   Yet at the same time he also seems to be concerned about world peace, racial issues and poverty, (all of this at the age of seven!)  However he tells me that he wants to grow up to be a “rocker”  and says that what he most wants for his birthday is an electric guitar!

I will soon begin looking at childrens electric guitars online and at music stores in our community.  I guess this could be a lot of fun and my son will be thrilled!  I can’t wait to see what he will become when she grows up.  As long as she’s happy that’s all I care about!  I guess time will tell!

Learning The Slide Guitar Technique!

Over the last several months, I’ve been trying to expose my son to music that was so influential during my growing up years.  While I try to be open-minded, it just seems that the majority of today’s music has lost its organic roots, and instead favoring a more slick, computerized  technique.  One of my favorite bands of all times, (and one that my son now likes also – is the Allman Brothers) I am thrilled that he can appreciate a band from the 1970’s!

Duane Allman’s masterful slide guitar playing technique inspired me to pick up a childrens guitar in my youth.   I am taking my son to look at some childrens electric guitars tomorrow so he can pick one out to start jamming on and  begin ‘rocking out’ to the Allman Brothers.  Duane Allman utilized an empty medicine bottle to create a mellow, soothing sound that simply cannot be attained with a metal slide. Though I could never really perfect Allman’s technique myself, I did become rather proficient at playing the traditional way. I’ll will hopefully pass those skills on to my son.

Practice Makes Perfect!

As any guitar player knows, when learning to play guitar the first few weeks are the toughest. It takes a lot of effort, determination and discipline to keep progressing forward when you’re not sure you’ll make it a musician. In reality, not even the most naturally talented guitarist is any good after just a few sessions.   Some evidence even suggests that the Beatles were a lousy bar band until they put in thousands of hours of rehearsal time.

In his recent book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell studies those successful individuals who amass great wealth and fame beyond most people’s imagination. Gladwell asserts that people such as Bill Gates and the Beatles are not merely geniuses who would succeed under any circumstances. Instead, Gladwell clearly states that they became great successes because of the hours of practice they put in honing their skills.  Gates spent months tinkering with computers in his garage and the Beatles played to empty barrooms in Germany for several years. This theory will hopefully  serve as an inspiration for kids – convincing them not to put down their childrens acoustic guitars or childrens electric guitars for years to come!

Keep Those Nails Trimmed!

People often note that not only do tools say a lot about a man’s character but that a man is only as good as his tools.  This can be true for carpenters and/or craftsmen but can also be said for musicians. However a guitar player’s toolbox doesn’t just consist of a guitar, guitar picks, amps but also the hands and fingers are finely controlled instruments in the toolbox of a good guitarist  This is true for adults playing full sized guitars and for kids who decide to play childrens acoustic or childrens electric guitars.  For the child guitarist it may take longer to find the best setup and believe it or not- finger nail length is a very important factor.

If the nails are too long, they can interfere with normal strumming and picking technique. Finger nails that are too long might adversely affect the fretting hand when it is trying to play.  It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to be precise and in control when holding down a string; . Fingernails that are too long and unkempt can create a buzzing sound so it’s best to keep them trimmed so they don’t get in the way of the strings

Coping with ADHD

My daughter was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) two years ago.  I already knew that she had a behavioral problem because it was so hard to get her to focus and complete homework. It is very hard for her to sit still in church, and  she would always get lost in the mall because she would run around unable to stay in one place for long.

Her therapist told me that I shouldn’t worry because many kids with ADHD are of normal and above average intelligence and are capable of doing very well in life. Her therapist simply advised me to help her find an outlet for her energy. We discussed various options  including knitting, needlework, basketball, even exploration of childrens electric guitars as a potential hobby. Overtime I have begun to understand my daughter’s condition, and with the proper knowledge am dealing with it better.  I know she will grow up to become a normal adult

What Family Means To Us!!!

So we’ve reached the end of 2010!  How does time go SO fast?  We had a pretty good Christmas this year and for the most part our kids still seem to be enjoying their gifts and we are always glad about that.  As we prepare for New Year’s Eve, my young son promises to ‘rock out’ along with all the other Rockin New Year’s Eve festivities that will take place again this year!  We bought our son a childrens electric guitar and he just LOVES it!  We really did our homework while searching for childrens electric guitars.

As a parent I really believe that  real success is measured through the love shared amongst members of the family.   Money and career is important but nothing can beat the love between parent and child!  Our older daughter loves figure skater and is rising through the ranks as a real contender.  Sharing this accomplishment with her has been an incredible bonding experience for our whole family!  My wish for this 2011 is that everyone can experience joy, sense of purpose and to be able to experience life as authentically as possible!  Happy New Year!!

Getting Ready For The Holidays

Christmas will be here in less than three weeks!  This year we took a chance and bought our eight year old daughter a kids electric guitar because we are pretty sure that it will be quite a big hit with her!  My husband and I looked long and hard at various types of childrens electric guitars and we believe that we have found the perfect fit for her, (a 31 inch pink guitar).   We know she wants to be a rocker like her uncle and that is fine with us as long as she doesn’t fall behind in school.

My husband feels that we should get lessons for her and says that she will also see that he watches the learn to play guitar DVD’s that we bought her.   I am excited to see what the future will hold! I hope everyone has a nice Christmas and best wishes for a healthy and fun filled 2011!

A Kids Electric Guitar, What A Great Gift!!

I have seen few kids as happy as my son to receive a guitar for his fifth birthday!!  We got him a kids electric guitar for his birthday last month after months of him telling us over and over that he had to have one for his birthday.  We had given him the good news last month that we would get him a kids electric guitar for his birthday and told him that he could even help us pick it out.  I must admit that it was fun looking at all the different kinds of childrens electric guitars.  Low and behold  we found one that we all agreed on boy is it cute!

So now he plays and plays and plays and then plays some more!!  For the most part I am glad to see him play except for the noise which can be a bit much at times.  We just recently got a ¾  kids guitar case so we can protect this precious little guitar.  We are glad to see our son so happy and know that he will feel even more a part of the family as his brother has played  the drums in his high school band and now wants to start his own band with a couple of friends,  and his sister plays the piano and the flute.  Who knows, maybe one day they will all perform together!

Our Musical Ties

My nephew, LOVES to play electric guitar in a local band!  It is his true passion in life and it is what keeps him going.  His mother and I, (my nephews’ father passed away last year and I live with my sister to help out as I love the boys like they were my own)  want him to go off to college next year but also know that he will continue to play bass guitar in his band.  Now my ten year old nephew wants to get into the act as well.  My sister and I have begun our search for childrens electric guitars.

Money is an issue for us since I am the only one working at present.  We are searching now so that we can find a good deal that can be shipped in time for Christmas.  I must say that we have really found some cheap electric guitars that are quality products. I am convinced that my nephew will be quite pleased as we will be sure to pick a ‘really’ cool guitar for him!  I know that my seventeen year old nephew will also be happy because soon he will be able to jam with his younger brother.  I can hardly wait until Christmas day!

They’re Only Young Once!

Your kids are only young once and it just seems like they grow up before you can even turn around!  Where did the time go?  Was it just yesterday that we took the training wheels off my now seventeen year old daughter’s bicycle?   Now more than ever my husband and I seem to want to relish the growing years of our six year old daughter before she loses that all too precious childlike joy and innocence!  Our daughter just turned six on September 5th and before her birthday she informed us that a kids electric guitar would make her a very happy little girl on her birthday!.  My husband and I weren’t sure quite where to find the best quality as well as affordable  childrens electric guitars.  The internet as always proved to be quite a help to us.  We finally both agreed on a panda shaped guitar that we knew our daughter would just love!!

The day of her birthday arrived and presenting our daughter with this beginner guitar proved to be even more fun than originally anticipated!  I don’t think I have ever seen someone more excited in my life and believe me her joy is also OUR joy!  We can tolerate the noise because it just seems to make her SO happy!  When she gets a little older should she still be interested in guitar, (and all indications make it appear that she will be), we will have her take guitar lessons.  My very best to everyone, Happy fall and Happy Halloween!
