Steel vs. Nylon Strings

When choosing a guitar for your child, do you an electric, acoustic or even a classical guitar.  If you want your child to play guitar there are many good quality cheap kids guitars available.  You could begin with a kids acoustic guitar which cost less.  There are two basic types of acoustic guitars: nylon-stringed and the steel-stringed.  Nylon-stringed guitars are easier on the fingertips because the strings are thicker and more flexible while steel strings can be pretty painful to play especially when the strings are taut.

The choice of guitar can actually depend on the music you want your child to play. Nylon strings are used for folk and classical music. Steel strings are best for rock, country and almost all other styles of music. Nylon strings produce a soft and classic sound of the guitar while the steel strings produce crisp and sharp sounds.  A common misconception about nylon guitars is that your fingers won’t get sore.   It is quite inevitable that young fingers get sore with both nylon and steel stringed guitars especially at the beginning.  Nylon strings are less dense than steel strings and therefore are a lot easier to push down to form the chord but steel strings can be pretty painful to push down since they are thinner and more difficult to push.  Both can take a lot of getting used to but are well worth it in the long run!

The Importance of Learning to “Slur”

When you hear the word ‘slur’ what might immediately come to mind is incoherent ramblings of someone who has had way too much to drink.  What probably would not come to mind is a technique known by seasoned musicians and performed by classical guitar players. Slurring is similar to hammer-ons and pull-offs, a technique that electric guitar players use.

This technique can be performed not only on full sized acoustic guitars but on childrens acoustic guitars as well.   Like the hammer-on, it takes some time to perfect.  In slurring like the hammer-on, the fretting fingers should be holding a note after a single pick. Then, without a second pick, a few fingers are used to slap out the next note on a higher fret. Pull-offs are achieved by literally pulling a few fretting fingers off the fretboard to reveal a lower note that’s already being held by a single finger

Parents wanting their children to learn to play guitar might consider a second hand guitar for their child. When looking at used beginner guitars an electric guitar may be a good choice as acoustic guitars can be bulky and hard for small hands to press down.  Acoustic guitar strings are also thicker and can hurt fingers after a very short time of playing. With the correct set up an electric guitar can be played comfortably by youngsters and/or new guitarists. Every time your child plays their amateur guitar they are practicing whether it sounds like music or not which reinforces them to keep playing. Taking lessons is a great way for children to learn the basics although there is something to be said about learning to play guitar online.  For one thing learning guitar online can be a real cost saver.

Tablature is a number system that represents the string and position on the fret board that you press. This might be more beneficial for the older guitar player and a bit challenging for youngsters.  There are many websites to learn from and tablature can be an easy way because the guitarist may never have to learn to read music. The tab sites can offer lessons, tips, and information that one can’t get from a teacher.  However there is often no substitute for a live teacher who can teach a student different styles and offer lots of encouragement.  Best of luck!

Beginning Acoustic Guitar: Things To Keep In Mind

So you want to learn acoustic guitar, what do you need to get started?  Most importantly you’ll need the right guitar. There are some things about guitars you need to know.  There are 2 types of acoustic guitars, the standard American steel string classic or the “classical” Spanish guitar with nylon strings.  If you want to play standard songs like “House of the Rising Sun” and classic rock tunes, a steel string is the best choice. If you want to play classical music then get the nylon string guitar.  If the guitar is for a child then you’ll need a 3/4 size or even 1/2 size guitar. There are many affordable childrens acoustic guitars that are also of good quality As an adult, a full size is great. But even the full scale guitars can vary somewhat in the size of the body. When you try guitars out at the store make sure you’re comfortable with the size. Nowadays good acoustic guitars are affordable!  It might be a good idea to get light gauge strings so the strings will hurt you less when you are first learning to play.

Learning only a handful of easy guitar chords at the beginning may be your best choice.  These chords are the following: C, A, G, E, D as well as A minor, E minor and D minor. D7 and A7 are also included in this grouping of easy guitar chords.  As you progress you’ll discover other things to learn such as the infamous F chord. But for now, keep your focus on these easy guitar chords to avoid frustration.  If you find the chords physically demanding, use a capo. The capo is a device that clamps onto the guitar to make the strings shorter. They’re usually very inexpensive and it can make a big difference in the beginning.  It’s entirely possible to teach yourself from the right books or online resources. Keep it simple for now with the 10 aforementioned easy guitar chords.   Do your best to get them sounding clear. Put the capo at the 2nd or 3rd fret if you need to. Once you have a couple of shapes memorized, try switching back and forth between them and pretty soon you’ll be on your way.

When choosing to play guitar as a hobby one must decide whether to purchase an electric, acoustic or even a classical guitar.  If you want your child to play guitar there are many guitars for children available and affordable.  You could begin with a kids acoustic guitar.  Acoustic guitars will cost less and will allow for a lot of practice.  There are two basic types of acoustic guitars: nylon-stringed and the steel-stringed. There are some people who would like to go with a nylon-stringed guitar since it would be easier on the fingertips. The strings are thicker and more flexible than steel. Steel strings can be pretty painful to play especially when the strings are taut.

The choice of guitar that you will purchase will actually depend on the music that you would like to play. But that is just false. It is quite inevitable that your fingers get sore with both nylon and steel stringed guitars at the beginning.  Nylon strings are less dense than steel strings. Therefore they are a lot easier to push down to form the chord. Steel strings can be pretty painful to push down since they are thinner and more difficult to push down. It takes a lot of getting used to make the soreness go away. And it is important that you practice to make sure that your fingers get used to the pushing down of the strings.  Don’t give up  because that breaking in period is well worth it!

little angel 11 beginner childrens guitarsMy “little angel” now age 17 has been the light of my life for many years now.  We have watched her go through many transitions which have included various boyfriends, alternative hobbies and activities ranging from tennis to cheerleading, and different hairstyles, (I must admit that I was NOT a fan of the “teased” hair look).    One interest that has never wavered in my daughter’s life is her LOVE of the guitar!

We knew when she was a baby that she loved music and so we decided to take a chance and search for beginner childrens guitars.  She started playing on a beginner acoustic guitar and now has quite a range of acoustic guitars as well as the mandolin. We have NEVER ONCE regretted the decision to buy her a beginner childrens guitar!  Our bright and musically gifted daughter now plays guitar in a band along with several of her girlfriends and they are beginning to take their act on the road!  They have recorded several CD’s and have become local heroes in our community!  My daughter does plan to go to college but playing guitar will always be her first love!
