Our Many And Varied Family

I have five children who all have very different interests.  My two older sons play soccer, my middle daughter is a very good pianist and my youngest son loves riding his bike and wreaking havoc on our home any chance he gets.  My youngest daughter and the “baby of the family” says that she wants to learn guitar just like her father.  Her father, my husband has played acoustic and electric guitar with friends throughout the years at churches, wedding receptions, and local watering holes in our area.   My daughter is quite aware that she has a birthday in April and has decided that she wants an acoustic guitar!  I am game as long as she realizes that she needs to have balance in her life and be involved in other activities

My husband has many contacts and does know an awful lot about guitars.   He thinks that a childrens acoustic guitar would be perfect for our daughter and says that he know where to find discount childrens guitars that are quality products.   My husband is quite excited to give our daughter some proper instruction but realizes that she may need further lessons with someone who teaches on a more regular basis.

eric amatuer guitarsChristmas time is the time for festivities, fun, being together and MUSIC!  I perform in a band with three of my very closest friends.  We’ve known each other since childhood and we all LOVE Christmas because it is the time when we perform for family and friends in town.  It is a great homecoming for everyone!  Nothing would make me happier than to have my son Eric join me on stage one day!  He has LOVED music his whole life and now expresses an interest learning to play the acoustic and electric guitar.  My wife and I agree that we want to start looking at amateur guitars for Eric.

I am excited about this and I know Eric will be a fast learner, after all it’s in the genes!  He has been begging us for several years to let him learn to play guitar.  He is in good hands because I will teach him and so will the many friends in the business who will show him different styles of playing.  I think it will be another fantastic Christmas!

kids drum sets brianAs a musician for many years I LOVE being able to share my interest with all my nieces and nephews.  Through the years they have even accompanied me on gigs.  I have always loved to sing.  I also play the acoustic and electric guitar as well as the mandolin.   It has been great to have family come and see me their support means more to me than they will ever know.

I am trying to “encourage” my nephew Billy who I believe is a “budding” musician with a bright future ahead of him.  He is a drummer at heart and this is very apparent to me.  Christmas is coming and I HAVE to get him a kids drum set!  I have some great contacts and wonderful friends who will guide me in the right direction to find some good quality kids drum sets.  So my fantasy is to have at least Billy join me on stage!

Finding a hobby helps combat depression

electric guitars for children oliviaI am a concerned father and a single parent.  I love my children immensely and would do anything to see them smile.  It’s been hard at times as my kids don’t have a mother in their lives but we all care enough about each other to see anything through.  My daughter Olivia suffers from depression.  I believe that she has inherited this from both her mother and I.  I have been in my own therapy off and on throughout the years and recently found a good competent therapist for Olivia.   At a recent session that included Olivia and myself the therapist recommended that Olivia pursue a hobby as part of her treatment.  I have been trying to get Olivia to do this for years but I think she is now more receptive to the idea since her therapist suggested it as well.

Olivia knows that my therapy has often been music as I have played acoustic and electric guitar in various bands and solo acts over the years.  I can’t believe we never thought of this before but Olivia also seems to have inherited my interest in the guitar.  She just informed me that she would like to play the guitar as a hobby like me.  I am thrilled and will begin looking specifically at guitars for children.  Olivia says she wants to play the kids electric guitar and I believe she may have a secret fantasy of becoming the next Hannah Montana.  So, it looks like I will try to focus on electric guitars for children.  Wish me luck!

nate 11Playing both acoustic and electric guitar for many years It is no wonder all my kids have picked up my passion.  It hasn’t been easy for my kids who have basically grown up without a mother.  As their father I have been working long hours for years to support them.  During the day I work in a bank and at night play my guitar in local coffee houses should I be so lucky.  Music is my outlet and although it sometimes takes time away from the kids, it is my “therapy’ if you will.

I guess I would have to say that my oldest son Nate is the most serious about the guitar.  He also plays in his free time and one day hopes to join me in the act.  Nate is eleven years old and has picked up the guitar quickly ever since I purchased him a vey quality childrens beginner guitar 2 years ago.  I decided that I am going to honor his passion in any way I can.  Through music I feel close to my kids.  I am now looking for some good sturdy childrens guitar cases.  I want my kids to find something they feel excited about because it makes what can often be a hard life, much sweeter!
