I have been teaching in the inner city school districts of Philadelphia and Chicago for many years now. Working with children in music education has given me great insight to the inner workings of the child psyche and essentially “what makes kids tick”. I can say that the kids who learn to play instruments, (such as guitars for children) seem to learn a necessary discipline that carries through to other important areas of life.
I very recently worked with a young boy who purchased an electric guitar for children and now gets better grades and has less problems with discipline. The parents of this particular child shared with me that their son is more willing to get homework done and complete chores so that he can have time to “jam” on his kids electric guitar. The parents indicated that they have even built a studio in their basement so that their son can take his hobby seriously and they can have peace and quiet in the rest of the house. This story is just one example of how music has enriched lives and provided a very necessary outlet.
