Watching My Kids Grow Up!

As a father who has been around for a while I can offer some input and some insight.  I have five children, a 25 year old son, and a 21 year old daughter to my first marriage. In my second marriage, I have a 15 year old daughter, a ten year old daughter and a six year old son.  It seems like I have been a parent for forever having witnessed all the stages of childhood and adolescence over and over and often in succession.  Kids go through phases, try on new identities and as a parent and at times a “single” parent, I have done the very best I can to be there for my kids in the way they need me most!

Birthdays seem to be a constant event in our home that we are always preparing for and just seem to “sneak up” on us!  It seems that all my kids are really into music!  My oldest son from my first marriage has played drums for years and still plays in a well known local band in our area.  It all started when my first wife and I bought him a kids drumset at the age of six.  He’s been playing ever since!  Now his kid brother, my six year old wants a kids electric guitar in the worst way as he too wants to play guitar in a rock band some day!  I said to my current wife, “I’m not sure I want to look for crazy guitars when it seems like only yesterday we taught him how to tie his shoes!”   I guess since our six year old is the youngest, I want to savor his childhood as long as I can and thinking of him playing in a band is something I’m just not ready for!  But as my wife maintains purchasing him a childrens guitar doesn’t make him that much closer to moving out and being on his own.  I must admit that I rather agree!
