When choosing to play guitar as a hobby one must decide whether to purchase an electric, acoustic or even a classical guitar. If you want your child to play guitar there are many guitars for children available and affordable. You could begin with a kids acoustic guitar. Acoustic guitars will cost less and will allow for a lot of practice. There are two basic types of acoustic guitars: nylon-stringed and the steel-stringed. There are some people who would like to go with a nylon-stringed guitar since it would be easier on the fingertips. The strings are thicker and more flexible than steel. Steel strings can be pretty painful to play especially when the strings are taut.
The choice of guitar that you will purchase will actually depend on the music that you would like to play. Nylon strings are used for folk and classical music. Steel strings are best for rock, country and almost all other styles of music. Nylon strings produce a soft and classic sound of the guitar while the steel strings produce crisp and sharp sounds. A common misconception about nylon guitars is that your fingers won’t get sore. But that is just false. It is quite inevitable that your fingers get sore with both nylon and steel stringed guitars at the beginning. Nylon strings are less dense than steel strings. Therefore they are a lot easier to push down to form the chord. Steel strings can be pretty painful to push down since they are thinner and more difficult to push down. It takes a lot of getting used to make the soreness go away. And it is important that you practice to make sure that your fingers get used to the pushing down of the strings. Don’t give up because that breaking in period is well worth it!
