The Advantages of Kids Learning to Play the Drums

Children often seem like never ending balls of energy that sometime seem to be rambunctious. Parents are often searching for a healthy way to release and channel this energy.  Many parents turn to sports such as baseball, softball, or hockey and physical activity is a great strategy for tiring out your kids, just a little bit, so they’re not bouncing off the walls. However, the same amount of energy can also be applied to playing a musical instrument because it also unleashes a flood of creativity to your child’s brain to boot.

Childrens drumsets are the ideal musical instrument for energy release as I soon learned when I bought one for my nine year old son. Imagine your child exercising his or her arms and legs and also don’t forget about the workout from the foot pedal. If you and your child are ready for a musical adventure, purchase a drumset today you won’t regret it!

Drum Repair Importance in the Life of the Drum Set

Many children state that they have an interest in playing percussion from the moment they hear that drums are taught in music class. Others hear the call and learn from an older brother and his rock and roll band. Still others show a natural rhythmic talent through tapping and impromptu drumming on household items like a tabletop or a tin can. At any rate, that rhythmic ability will grow exponentially once children have access to  childrens drum sets.

Of course, there’s more to playing drums than just beating the skins with a blunt object. Kids however need be taught to pay close attention to the condition of the drum heads so that they can be changed when needed. The life of a drum head is dependent upon the frequency and intensity with which it’s struck. In general terms double-ply drum heads sound bigger and have shorter life spans than single-ply heads, which have more of a ringing tone.

Learning How To Tune The Guitar!

When I first started to learn how to play guitar, my only method to tune this precious instrument was by ear, which is approximately 80% accurate. As I got older and started to play in what was essentially a Bon Jovi cover band, I began to use an electric tuner.  When purchasing kids guitars an electric tuner is also what I would recommend.  You can usually find a low-priced electric tuner that is battery operated and has a built in microphone.

Most guitar tutorials (especially for kids and beginners) are tuned to standard which is EADGBE and is the most popular in terms of playing many pop songs.  Once you show kids how to affectively use the electronic tuner, they can experiment with additional tunings to their hearts content to find their own sound.

Oh The Changing Times!

My daughter wants a guitar for her birthday no matter what!  She says that if I can only get her one gift that wouldn’t be very good but if it has to ONLY one gift it MUST be an electric guitar!  Woa!!  In my mind, at the ripe old age of seven, how could she be so decisive and what happened to being satisfied with a Barbie doll or a new bicycle?

Do they even make electric guitars for kids?  Yeah, I guess they do.  Yeah, I know they do!  So it’s off to the “net” I go in search of kids electric guitars! I am pretty impressed with what I see and I think I can find a little ‘gem’ for my budding ‘Rock Goddess’  I can’t expect my daughter to live the life I did at her age, these are different times.  I just have to ‘roll’ and/or ‘rock and roll’ with it, after all she is a really good kid!

Understanding the Anatomy of the Guitar

Sometimes students of guitar begin learning to play from an instructor with their own set of knowledge before the lessons begin. Some of the experts believe that it’s best for the child to start with a clean slate so that bad habits or tendencies don’t get in the way of learning proper technique.  While this is true, it is very helpful if children know something about the anatomy of the guitar.

Above the neck of the guitar, one will find the headstock, which houses the tuners. The neck itself holds the guitar’s frets, and the six strings run along its length to their terminal points in the headstock. The dots that are strategically positioned on the neck’s surface between the frets are known as position markers. The sound hole lends kids acoustic guitars their sound-producing capability.

‘Encouraging’ Musical Pursuits

I was not aware that it was possible to buy a childrens guitar but my girlfriend Tanya said that she just bought one for her youngest son and it was really not that expensive at all.  This is very good to know!  I too have a young daughter who I truly believe would enjoy learning to play guitar.  On a whim I began looking yesterday at guitars for kids online while at work, (don’t tell my boss!) and I am thrilled at how many cool guitars are available for kids her age.  I’m so excited that I might even get one for myself!

My daughter has always seemed to LOVE music from day one but she is a bit on the shy side so I think this might be a hobby to bring her ‘out’ a little more.  As a mother I want to encourage her but not push her ‘too’ hard.  We will try out the guitar and if she doesn’t like it we will move on to something else and who knows, maybe I’ll start playing the guitar as a new hobby for me!

From One Generation To The Next

Ever since I was 8 years old I’ve had a passion for playing the guitar. While I have gone through countless instruments during my playing career, I’ve kept some of my favorite models to pass along to my children. Now that my own son is eleven, he is beginning to ask me when he will be able to play and what type of instrument will he be allowed to play?  I think that I have the ‘perfect’ kids guitar for my boy!  This guitar has stood the test of time despite all the variety of guitars for children available today.

Before I impart one of my most cherished possessions, I want to be sure that it will be properly taken care of. It’s not that I don’t trust my son, but I know that children’s things have a tendency to take a good deal of wear and tear so I’ve decided to also look into some guitar cases for kids before I hand it down

My Little Mini-Me

My little girl is a bit of a ‘tomboy’ which I love!  She has been my ‘mini-me’ for most of her life and I wouldn’t have it any other way!  Of course I want her to have her own identity but there’s nothing like a ‘Daddy’s girl’.  She loves to climb trees, ride her bike, and lives to accompany myself and my buddies on fishing trips.  I am glad she likes the outdoors so much.  She has a birthday coming up in just three short weeks and she is very excited that she is turning seven and getting to be such a big girl now!  Several weeks ago we spent time at my buddy’s house and she loved watching his older son play the drums.  To say that my daughter was fascinated is the understatement of the year!

I have decided to go ALL out this year and get my precious little girl a childrens drum set.  I know that she will be thrilled beyond belief!  It is amazing how many really fun kids drumsets are out there.  I want my daughter to be exactly who she is and I’m glad to support her in any way I can, however it doesn’t hurt that we seem to have a lot in common!

Beginner Drums for the Aspiring Musician

Parents should study their kids for signs of talent, which can include academic, artistic, athletic or even musical ability. When a child demonstrates an aptitude for or interest in playing music, that desire can be fostered in the beginning with some type of discount equipment to help cut cost.  For the child in pursuit of learning to play drums, a basic drum set should at least include a bass drum, a hanging tom and a snare drum with a high-hat cymbal. These are the raw essentials with which a child can hone his percussive skills.

Even kids drum sets can be customized for optimal sound. You can first begin by adjusting the tension of the snare drum. The specific sound that a drum makes is determined by the tension of the skin as it lies across the frame. You can turn the lugs of the drum clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to decrease it. It is very important to note that if you tighten the drum too much, it could be punctured by an eager enthusiastic drummer! Best of luck!

Getting Your Own Cool Guitar

My extremely cool and ultra sweet daughter says that she wants an electric guitar in the worst way.  After a very persuasive argument she has actually convinced me that a kids guitar would be a perfect gift for her!  I am glad she is enthusiastic and I just hope that those ‘cool’ kid guitars are in our price range. My daughter assures me that they are because she has a friend who got one for Christmas and her father is even out of work right now.  I must admit that she is probably right so I guess I’m game.

I am pretty impressed with the different models of electric guitars for kids available.  Her birthday is January 30th and so I guess now is as good a time as any to get him this precious gift.  I must admit that I begged my folks for a guitar when I was her age but my frugal parents made me wait until I was much older.  Times sure have changed!
