The Magic of Palm Muting

palm-muteAlthough there’s no substitute for hands-on guitar practice, students of the instrument can also benefit from listening to professional musicians. Close your eyes and try to visualize exactly what a guitarist is doing at any given moment during the song. In some cases, it’s difficult to believe that a guitar effect is the result of time-tested technique and not some studio wizardry or electronic trickery.

Such is the case with the palm mute, a subtle yet essential skill for any child trying to master kids guitars. The palm mute is all about finesse, as the picking hand should be used to muffle the strings while also playing a particular chord. The heel of the hand should rest lightly on every applicable string while the thumb and forefinger are used to pick as normal. Practice this technique carefully before bringing it out in a live performance setting.

Making Lilly’s Day!

discount-acoustic-guitars-lillyI am a concerned grandfather who is at present, raising his twelve year old granddaughter, Lilly.  She is the light of my life and I would do ANYTHING for her!  Christmas will be here before you know it and I want to see my Lilly’s face light up on Christmas morning.  She hasn’t had the easiest life and I am SO delighted to now give her the parenting she should have received in her earlier years.   Lilly LOVES Taylor Swift and I know she would like nothing more than to learn to play guitar and sing like her idol!

I have been looking for the perfect childrens acoustic guitar and have been asking my friends about it!  I am retired and money is a little tight so my son Teddy, (Lilly’s uncle) did an online search to see what discount acoustic guitars are available for kids.  Teddy said he found some guitars that he thinks Lilly would LOVE and he wants me to see them.  It gives me SO MUCH JOY to think about Lilly’s smile and how I can hardly now wait for Christmas to come!

childrens-guitars-jaredKids Kids Kids!, SO much to do for them and SO little time.  Hanukah is coming and Jared has informed me that he wants a cool guitar like his friend Avery!  Oh my God!  I’m not exactly on the up and up and question my ability to be a “cool” mom.  However, I am probably more resourceful than I give myself credit for.  Doing a search online produced more results than I thought it would.  I believe that I found some childrens guitars that just may make it into the “cool” range, (that is according to Jared).

I have now just purchased what I believe is a good quality childrens guitar and am amazed at how many cheap electric guitars I could find online!  I guess if it puts a smile on Jared’s face, I can tolerate the noise!  Now if I can just get my boyfriend Steve to build a sound proof studio, we’re in business!

A Good Christmas!

beginner-drums-jeffreyI am a single parent and am recently divorced.  Money is tight but we’re making it!  Christmas will be here before you know it and I’m already starting to think about what I can afford this year for the kids.  Jennifer, my ten year, old is usually pretty easy to buy for and I can usually find her some things that she really likes.  Jeffrey seems to have some “pie in the sky” ideas about what his parents can afford for Christmas and his birthday!  I need to get started early to see if I can find a compromise this year in what he wants and what won’t put too much of a strain on the budget.

I recently spoke to my ex, Sam, (with whom I am fortunately on good terms) and he said that Jeffrey wants to learn to play the drums!  He had mentioned this to me but I wasn’t sure I could provide this for him this Christmas.  Sam said that we should look online for beginner drums for Jeffrey.  I am pretty shocked and excited about how affordable these drum sets are!  I just purchased a childrens drum set and some books and DVD’s for beginner drum lessons and have money left over to spend on Jennifer!  I think that after all this may turn out to be a GREAT Christmas for everyone!

chloe-acoustic-guitar-for-kidsMy daughter Chloe and I are being fans of folk festivals.  Chloe has been attending them with me since she was a very little girl.  Spending this time with her has helped to create a very special bond between us!  My wife and I both play acoustic guitar in a small band and often are asked to play in churches in our area and sometimes even out of state.  For Chloe’s birthday this year my wife said to me, “Why not get Chloe an acoustic guitar?”

I looked at acoustic guitars and a friend told me that he knew of a website that catered to childrens instruments and had some very affordable acoustic guitars for kids!  I went online and was very pleased at the selection that I saw!  I am SO excited to give this gift to Chloe and also get her started on some acoustic guitar lessons! I just know she’ll be thrilled!  Who knows, maybe Chloe will be joining us soon on stage!
