guitar-for-kidsLearning a musical instrument can often be difficult, so you don’t want to put any unnecessary roadblocks in the way of your child while they’re learning how to play. To that end, you always want to ensure that the instrument fits them properly. If it’s too big or too small, it will make the entire process of playing more awkward than it has to be. This, in turn, will make everything else seem all the more complicated such as learning to read music and other hurdles.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to look into children sized instruments. If you’re looking for a guitar for kids, use this generalized chart to get an idea of what size to purchase. If they are six years or younger, you’ll usually need a ¼ size guitar. From seven to eight, they should graduate to a ½ size. And a nine to ten year old should do well with a ¾ size. If your child is eleven years or older, a full size guitar should work well. These are, of course, guidelines. It will really depend on the size and growth of your own child.

Electric Kid Guitars

Electric Kids GuitarsWhen I was about 11, I let my parents know that I wanted to learn how to play the electric guitar, and of course they gave me that parental glance.  I knew that electric kid guitars were expensive, not to mention the lessons to learn how to may, and since I hadn’t played there was no guarantee I’d continue.  My parents made a deal with me, they said they’d pay for half of the electric guitar if I paid for the other.

I worked for a whole summer as a paperboy, and earned my half of the electric guitar.  My parents were true to their word, and paid for the other half.  I think because I worked for it, the guitar was a lot more important to me.  I played it all through junior high and high school and all throughout college.

Encouraging Musical Pursuits

kids-guitarsThere are some activities that children can pursue that will truly help them in the long run, and one of those activities is learning a musical instrument. Even if they don’t pursue it beyond school, they will always have the discipline offered by this undertaking. They will also have the concrete skill of being able to read music. All of these creative kinds of learning greatly contribute to a more creative individual.

With this in mind, it’s a great idea to encourage any interest your child expresses regarding learning how to play an instrument. Whether it’s the guitar or the violin, one thing to keep in mind is that you should always get an instrument that’s tailored to your child. As such, look into kids guitars if that’s their instrument of choice. They’ll be a little smaller and easier to handle for your kid. Just remember that they will grow, and the instrument needs to grow with them
