Carrying On the Family Tradition

823037Ever since I was 11 years old I’ve had a passion for playing the guitar. While I have gone through countless instruments during my playing career, I’ve kept some of my favorite models to pass along to my children. Now that my daughter is eight, she is beginning to inquire as to when she will be allowed to pick up an instrument.

Before I impart some of my most cherished possessions, I want to be sure that they will be properly taken care of. It’s not that I don’t trust her, but I know that children’s things have a tendency to take a good deal of wear and tear. I’ve decided to give her one of my first guitars for her next birthday, although I will look into some guitar cases for kids before I hand it down.

A Sound Investment

guitar caseSometimes I feel like my parents when I carp on my children for not taking care of their things and recognizing the value of a dollar. A prime example of this is with my daughter; we bought her a guitar for Christmas and I have already found it lying around the house several times. She even had to replace several broken strings after her little brother tried the instrument

Since her grandparents gave her money for Christmas, my husband and I decided to mandate that the funds would have to be spent on a childrens guitar case. While she obviously was opposed to the idea, we know that she will be thankful when the case inevitably prolongs the life of the instrument

Treat the Guitar with Respect

guitar-case-kids-sizeKids don’t always treat their property with the respect and care it deserves, and who could blame them? When you’re a child, you’re too full of energy and enthusiasm to notice the fragility of objects such as musical instruments. It’s therefore important for parents to instill a modicum of respect for the child’s guitar. Since these instruments are generally pretty serious investments, they should be cared for in the proper way.

A hard-shell kids guitar case represents the best way to protect the instrument from potential damage. A few drops and dents won’t make much difference to the musical integrity of the instrument, but those minor problems can really add up over time. They are particularly helpful during car trips and plane rides, when it’s no longer practical to keep a guitar out of its case.

Taking the Show on the Road

kid-guitar-caseTo say that I come from a musical family would be a gross understatement. Although there are no truly professional musicians in our ancestry – at least not to my knowledge –practically every aunt, uncle and cousin has some sort of pet instrument that emerges during reunions and gatherings. I’m a huge proponent of the electric ax, so it’s probably no wonder that I’ve been teaching my 9-year-old the ropes.

We’ve already made plans for Thanksgiving, and it looks like the whole family will be down in Florida. Since we’ll be taking our musical show on the road, I thought it only appropriate that my son should get a kid guitar case. He’s so concerned about his guitar warping or getting wet outside in the rain that he practically insisted on getting a case. We’ve got a lot of practicing to do before my son shows off his talents for his proud family to see.
