Getting that Cool Guitar!

Monday, February 8, 2010

My oldest son, now fourteen has been playing guitar now for almost six years.  He had been begging us to get him an electric guitar and we finally relented and got him a childrens electric guitar.  He has pretty much played it to death and now he wants a new guitar.  He has shown me some pictures of some cool guitars and says that if we get him a new guitar now we will not have to get him a birthday gift when he turns fifteen in June.  My husband and I do feel that it is worth the investment since he has shown such passion for the “crazy guitar” this far.

I only insist that in his quest to be a “Rock God” he complete his studies and attend college because I think life is tougher these days without a college degree.  He “reluctantly” agrees to this and I think he feels that going to college is more of an opportunity to play in a really cool band and get as many gig as possible on his way up the ladder.  Oh well, what is a parent to do?  At least my child does have interests in life and thus far has been a pretty good student without a lot of effort.

Getting Your First Guitar

My all “too cool” son says that he wants an electric guitar in the worst way.  After a very persuasive argument he has actually convinced me that a kids guitar would be perfect for him.  I am glad he is enthusiastic and I just hope that those “cool” kid guitars are in our price range.  My son assures me that they are because he has a friend who got one last week and “his” dad is out of work right now.   I guess I’m game.

After looking online and talking to friends I think that kids guitars may in fact be more affordable than I thought.  His birthday is next month so I guess now is as good a time as any to get him this precious gift.  I must admit that I begged my folks for a guitar when I was his age but my frugal parents made me wait until I was much older.  Times seem to really have changed but when it’s all said and done, people remain pretty much the same.

Encouraging Musical Pursuits

It is not difficult to instill a love of music into a child. Most children love to sing and dance so childrens guitars often make a perfect present. Learning to play any musical instrument takes time, patience and money. It might be important to arrange private lessons so your child can learn proper technique from the beginning.  A good teacher will insist that their student practice their chords before they begin to learn more advanced level songs. Guitars for children come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Childrens guitars are available in both acoustic and electric. Allow your child to pick one or the other and once they become more proficient in acoustic or electric guitar they can easily begin to learn the other.

If you need an excuse to buy that childrens guitar, research shows that children who are exposed to music lessons from a young age will grow up with a higher IQ.  Learning guitar can also aid your child when he learns to read in school.  It also helps to increase self esteem giving your child a sense of achievement when they master a particular sequence or song.  There are so many benefits including the joy you will experience watching your child accomplish something and seeing the joy on his or her face.

Our Many And Varied Family

I have five children who all have very different interests.  My two older sons play soccer, my middle daughter is a very good pianist and my youngest son loves riding his bike and wreaking havoc on our home any chance he gets.  My youngest daughter and the “baby of the family” says that she wants to learn guitar just like her father.  Her father, my husband has played acoustic and electric guitar with friends throughout the years at churches, wedding receptions, and local watering holes in our area.   My daughter is quite aware that she has a birthday in April and has decided that she wants an acoustic guitar!  I am game as long as she realizes that she needs to have balance in her life and be involved in other activities

My husband has many contacts and does know an awful lot about guitars.   He thinks that a childrens acoustic guitar would be perfect for our daughter and says that he know where to find discount childrens guitars that are quality products.   My husband is quite excited to give our daughter some proper instruction but realizes that she may need further lessons with someone who teaches on a more regular basis.

grandma beginner drum setsI love my mother I really do!  She has been a good mother to me and now she wants to majorly dote on my kids.  It is fine with me as long as she doesn’t spoil them too much and make them think that the world will just hand them things on a silver platter.  She actually is the perfect grandma who knows that her wonderful young grandson has a big birthday approaching.  She wants to get him what he’s been talking about the very most lately, a childrens drum set!  I told my mother that if he really wants this then we will go in on the cost.  Because my mother is unfamiliar with the internet I have begun a search online.  As is often the case with the internet, if you really look, you can find some incredible deals!

Yesterday I looked for some beginner drum sets that do seem to be in our price range and a little cheaper than I thought they would be.  I have to admit that when I was young, I too loved the drums and wish that there had been more of the kids drum sets that I see available today!  Hey you only turn seven once, let him have all the fun he truly deserves!

sweetheart childrens electric guitarsMy daughter has been a fan of Hannah Montana for several years.  She has informed us that she knows that she can sing like Hannah Montana and also REALLY wants to learn to play guitar.  My wife is all for it and says that even if this interest is just a phase, she thinks we should honor it.  Our daughter’s birthday is March 14th and my wife says that she has begun looking at childrens electric guitars online.  She has bookmarked some good websites and wants me to check out some really cool guitars that she believes our daughter will love.

So we are going to get her involved in our church choir.  She is excited about this but says that it’s rock music that she really wants to sing.  I guess it will be fun for the whole family to listen to our daughter sing and play her childrens electric guitar!  I am quite sure that our daughter will have a very happy birthday!

wow kids guitarsI try to be the best parent I can be which is not always easy in these trying times.  Money is tight and since my husband lost his job in November, we are managing but it isn’t easy sometimes.  I think that now is a great time to show our kids that materialism will not make them happy and the best things in life are free.  My son however would say that the best thing in life is a kids electric guitar!  He has been hinting at this for several months as he knows he has a birthday next month.

I have begun pricing kids guitars online and so far I am pretty impressed with the price range.  I think we will be able to get our son the guitar he has been dreaming of after all.  I guess if he really learns to play the guitar well the whole family can enjoy it.   The sound of music is priceless and hopefully the whole family can enjoy this gift!

Managing ADHD

adhdWhen my son was diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), I was at a total loss. I already knew that he had a behavioral problem because it was so hard to teach him to mind. He couldn’t sit down in church, and he always got lost in the mall because he was running about.

His therapist told me that I shouldn’t worry because there are many other cases of ADHD kids growing up to be normal or even more above average than their peers. He simply advised me to help him find an outlet for his energy. He gave me options including a trampoline, childrens drumsets, or a basketball. Slowly I am beginning to understand my son’s condition, and with the proper knowledge in dealing with it, I know that I can raise him to become a normal adult.

The Basics Of Learning Guitar

learn beginner guitarThere are many different types of guitar lessons for beginners. First you will want to purchase a good quality beginner guitar. The easiest (and cheapest) way to learn to play guitar is from the internet or a DVD.  It is sometimes best to start with an acoustic guitar because you won’t have to worry about an amplifier and it’s a better way to make your hands strong and accustomed to the fretboard.  Other ways you can learn is to go to a music store and ask for lessons, go to a private teacher, or even have a teacher come to your home. Whatever you do, just take it slowly.  Try to get comfortable with having a guitar in your lap. You will want to learn to tune your guitar properly. Standard tuning for a 6-string guitar is E-B-G-D-A-E (starting from the bottom, string 1, to the top, string 6).

Next you should start by learning some basic chords.  Then practice switching between the chords. After you start feeling comfortable with your fingers on the guitar then it is time to just learn more and more chords, scales, theory, and of course reading music. In closing, practice, practice, practice. The more time you invest, the better you will get. There are endless lessons to learn in order to master the guitar. But do not give up. If you are truly interested it will all be worth it in the end.

The Wiz Kid Strikes Again!

wizkid childrens drum setMy son has been a ‘wiz” at pretty much everything he has tried.  He is a great student with minimal work, and he LOVES math and science!  He decided to rollerblade and began doing twists and turns almost instantly.  We were thrilled, “scared” but also thrilled!  Our inquisitive son had expressed an interest in the drums and so this past Christmas we bought him a childrens drum set that he just seems to love beyond measure.  I really enjoyed checking out all the childrens drum sets that were available online.

Since he acquired his “extremely cool” kids drum set, he appears to have developed a good rhythm and sound. He turns on his favorite songs and “rocks out” to the music!  I loved the drums at his age too and as a teenager spent a couple of years playing in a band, so I totally get why he loves it so much!  Happiness is knowing that you have helped contribute to the obvious joy expressed in your children’s eyes!
