Learning to “Have Your Cake and Eat It Too!”

So we just got through celebrating our daughter’s fourteenth birthday and as can happen, we spent more money then we should,(mostly because I left the shopping up to my husband).  Our youngest son will turn seven on April sixteenth and has informed us that what he wants most for his birthday is a kids guitar like his friend Billy.  My husband who wants to honor his children’s wishes is not sure he can honor this one.  I however am always the bargain hunter.  I know that I can look online and find cheap kids guitars that are good quality and my kid will adore!

It seems that my son has already told us exactly which guitar he wants and where to get it but what he doesn’t know is that I can probably find it elsewhere for half the price.   It always makes me feel good to see what bargains I can find.  I think I could make a living doing this for other people and just have a ball.  So I think my youngster will be ‘rockin out” on a very affordable childrens electric guitar pretty darn soon!

A lot of children express an interest in learning to play guitar. Many children and teenagers choose to learn acoustic guitar but at what age should they start? This is like asking the question “How long is a piece of string?” You must take into account some very basic questions. First, is your child big enough to hold an acoustic guitar comfortably?  Acoustic guitars for kids come in several sizes. The smallest real guitar that you can buy is a ¼ size guitar. This kids guitar is designed for kids between the ages of 4-6 years old whose height is between 3ft 3inches – 3ft 9inches. The next size kids guitar is a half size for kids between the ages of 5-8 years old and whose height is 3ft 10inches- 4ft 5inches. The ¾ size  kids guitar is designed for children 4ft 6inches- 4ft 11inches and the full size kids guitar is for children 5ft and over.

After you have established the proper sized guitar, it is extremely important to know whether  your child’s fingers are strong enough to hold the strings of the guitar.  It is also very important to note that children should use a kids acoustic guitar that has nylon strings.  Kids acoustic guitars that have steel strings are too hard for soft hands.  Finally make sure that your child has the necessary commitment and enthusiasm.  Playing guitar can be a great hobby for your child as long as you do your homework.  Best of luck and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

What’s Most Important In Life!

Our very adorable five year old son is SO excited about his sixth birthday that is coming up on the second of April.  He wants to play the drums in the worst way and my husband and I believe that it would be a great idea to get him a kids drumset.  My brother got his son a childrens drumset two years ago and it went over so well that I have no problem getting one for our son.  I will start bookmarking sites that include drums for kids that pique the interest of both my husband and myself.

I am excited to watch my kids and grow and nothing makes me happier than to see them happy!  I am probably just as excited as my son is for his birthday to come!  They’re only young once and I don’t want to miss a minute!  Spoken from a grateful parent who at the moment appears to have her priorities straight!

A Chip Off The Old Block

My son you could say is a bit of a “chip off the old block”.   He has watched me play acoustic guitar and mandolin for many years.  We had bought him kids electric guitar when he was five and basically he wore the thing out.   He has been pretty much a fast learner and now he wants to play both acoustic and electric guitar and has asked us if we could get him both for his upcoming birthday that will not only be a birthday present but a Christmas present as well!  Of course he knows that by the time Christmas rolls around we will get him some Christmas gifts!   My son has been playing in a band and believes that music will be his life.  We however want him to also get an education

My wife is very supportive but can also be more practical than me because I too love guitar and understand getting lost in the passion for it.  She is the emotional gatekeeper in our family and she seems to help our family create balance.  She wants our son to own a cool guitar or guitars as long as he lives a balanced life and is happy.  I can’t  argue with that and in the long run our son can’t either!

The Importance Of Compromise!

When my husband gets excited about something he goes all out and I mean all out!  He recently told me that after having a heart to heart talk with our young on regarding what he wants most for his birthday.  After a thoughtful but very enthusiastic pause, he replied with a REALLY BIG smile that he wanted an electric guitar!  My husband said “cool!” and immediately went to work to find the best and fanciest kids electric guitar in town and online!  The ever practical part of me said “Wait a minute buster!”  And so I began my search for cheap childrens guitars!  Now please don’t misunderstand cheap doesn’t necessarily mean low quality.

After a period of time of going back and forth with my husband we finally found a good quality and very inexpensive childrens electric guitar!  I am all for supporting my children as long as we live within our means.  My husband and I will probably continue to battle over finances but I am glad that in time we are usually able to work things out!   At least in this situation everyone is satisfied!

All In Fun!

We haven’t had to work too hard to get our kids interested in hobbies.   They have tried all kinds of sports, (from baseball to soccer) and musical instruments (from piano to kids drums).  Recently our seven year old daughter came home from school and said that she know what she wants to do with her life,  she wants to play electric guitar like her idols, the Jonas Brothers.  Oh God!  Tell me this is just a phase!   My husband thinks this is great and assures me that it’s all in fun. He said that he recently saw a childrens guitar that was heart shaped and thinks our daughter might like  something like that!

Our little girl is so enthusiastic and her love of guitar is no different.   We will take our daughter shopping soon for some beginner electric guitars!  Last night we looked at some childrens electric guitars online and bookmarked some sites that we really liked.  Our daughter can hardly contain her excitement!  Her birthday is next month and that should be plenty of time to pick the best most affordable beginner electric guitar for our rock star wannabe!

Icing On The Cake!

I am so glad that my family is healthy and happy.  After that the rest is just icing on “the sweet cake of life”.  Life is hard and when good things happen it just really seems like a blessing after all!  Last week our daughteer celebrated her thirteenth birthday and never was she so excited then when she came downstairs and saw amateur drums waiting for her in the family room!  The look of joy on her face was well worth all the money we spent (which actually wasn’t as much as I had anticipated!)

Now she plays and plays and plays.  We are happy about this and for now seem to be tolerating the noise as well as can be expected.  Our younger son seems to be getting quite a kick watching his older sister play and now is starting to hint that he wants to play electric guitar.  He assures me that we can find some cheap electric guitars online as his friend Billy, (who practically lives at our house) got a really cool kids electric guitar for Christmas.  We may have to mull this one over for a little while.  Our younger son’s birthday isn’t until June so we do have some time to save money and look around.  With five kids one does have to plan.  Anyway, we are blessed to keep putting another sweet layer of icing on our cake!

Born to Bang!!!

It seems that most boys enjoy banging the drums and get an early start as they pick up objects in their homes and start banging on whatever is around from coffee tables to chairs to anything that is available.  So my wife and I now think it is time to get our young son the proper equipment to “bang on”.  I have been checking around and I know that there are some pretty cool drums for children available today.  Call it an early birthday present, call it whatever you want, but I know are very eager musical son will just love it!

Our son is for the most part enjoying school and I know that he will love being able to bring a kids drumset to class for show and tell and possibly be able to play it in music class.  I love seeing my kids happy and finding joy in the fruits of my labor!  Soon our house will be filled with the wonderful sound of some banging drums!

The Family That Plays Together…

I have lived a good life.  I married young and have a good wife that has stood by me all these years.  We have three children, a son and two daughters.  Our son and older daughter now have children of their own.  Music has always been a big part of our family with all of my children playing musical instruments throughout their lives.  Out son still plays guitar at our church and at bars and coffee houses.  Now his nine year old son has developed that “itch” to learn to play guitar too. So my son and I are thinking of getting him an early birthday present and have begun looking for beginner childrens guitars!

Boy have times changed.  There is so much more to choose from. Now there are guitars for children that are specified for a child’s particular needs.  I know we will find the perfect beginner childrens guitar that my grandson will love! I am so glad that our family’s tradition of loving and playing music continues! After all, the family that plays together stays together!

Following Your Child’s Interests

My girls love life and put their heart and soul into whatever interests them at the moment.  My oldest loves pyramids and if it were up to her we’d take a trip to Egypt next week.  My middle daughter wants to be an equestrian in the worst way.  Now my youngest and very much full of personality says that one day she will grow up to be a country singer like her idols.  She know that she has a birthday coming up in the spring and that in order to be like her idols she needs to get an acoustic guitar too!  So I guess my enthusiastic husband and I will be looking at acoustic guitars for children.  Sounds like fun and I know that because my daughter is so excited, she will really play with gusto!

Today there seem to be so many beginner acoustic guitars for children.  A brief search online pulled up a couple of websites that my husband and I have already bookmarked.  Even though a child’s interest can be fickle my husband and I feel proud that our children have interests and we don’t have to constantly pull them away from the many electronic devices available to kids today.  As parents we very much feel blessed!
